New generation of cooking shows eye lone living

[1] Remnants of not-so-attractive pork leftover from last night’s delivery; a couple of old bottles of sauce; a few pieces of lettuce; and a carton of eggs. With these seemingly random items that can be found inside our refrigerators, a star chef could whip up a dish befitting a five-star restaurant.

*remnant: 잔여물, 잔재, 흔적 (=leftover, remnants of the past: 과거의 유산)
*befit ~: ~에 걸맞는 (in keeping with: ~와 일치하는, 어울리는)

[2] Now, a TV show in Korea is turning this into a reality, as professional chefs use humble ingredients to create delicious dishes in just under 15 minutes, leaving both the show’s participants and viewers drooling for more.

[3] Every week, a popular cooking program, “Please Take Care of My Refrigerator,” brings in items from the refrigerators of Korean guest celebrities and asks six professional chefs to cook new and creative dishes on the spot using only the ingredients that come “straight from the fridge.” The program is not alone in appealing to generations of busy Koreans for whom home cooking is often put on the backburner.

*celebrity: 유명인사 (fame: 명성)
*on the spot: 즉석에서 (=impromptu)
*put on the backburner: 뒤로 미루다 (=put off, postpone)

[4] Changes in recent demographics are lending a hand in boosting the popularity of these new and entertaining shows. Experts say that the rise of single-person households and the weakening of the traditional family structure are shaping a new generation of viewers who are attracted to a genre of cooking shows that can meet their needs.

*lend a hand: 도움을 주다 (=aid, give a leg-up)
