Kids’ MMA gains popularity in U.S. amid concern
They have yet to celebrate their 10th birthday party, but these children punch, kick and even strangle each other with their diminutive fists and feet. Their parents, instead of breaking them apart, egg them on as the two engage each other in a furious battle.
Horrifyingly illegal? Not really.
Pankration, a mixed martial arts competition for children, is rapidly gaining popularity in the United States. According to the Daily Mail, an estimated 3 million children participate in MMA clubs nationwide.
Dozens of YouTube videos feature children as young as 5 throwing punches at each other. Some of the videos appear to have been uploaded by the young fighters’ proud parents, as they bear titles such as “so-and-so’s first Pankration Match.”
According to U.S. photographer Sebastian Montalvo, who witnessed a Pankration event in California, encouragement from the parents is what is fueling the fast growth of “children’s MMA.”
Along with the photos of the event, Montalvo told a story of a father who urged his son to stay in the ring even as tears streamed down the boy’s face.
Pankration has had a barrage of critics including Sen. John McCain, who called for banning the sport.
While many people find the sight of boys and girls pummeling each other disturbing, supporters say it teaches children a culture of fair competition. An MMA teacher in Alabama said the key lessons in his classes are to get in shape and have fun.
Pankration is legal as long as it is supervised by the authorities, although policymakers are starting to acknowledge the risks inherent in the fast-growing sport. Last month, California Gov. Jerry Brown signed legislation that would mandate the state’s athletic commission to oversee children’s MMA competitions.
According to the Associated Press, rules that set a minimum age for competitors or require a doctor to be present on-site for tournaments may also be implemented by state officials.
