지난 회에 이어, 유용한 비즈니스 영어 표현들을 소개합니다. ‘비즈니스 영어’라는 게 따로 떨어져 존재하는 것은 아닙니다만, 일상 회화에서 흔히 볼 수 없는 표현들을 활용하는 것도 사실입니다. 저희 책 『나는 더 영어답게 말하고 싶다 비즈니스 편』에서 뽑은 표현들입니다.  

<주식투자>

We are predicting that our company’s revenue will be between $4.1 and $4.5 billion while the street consensus is $4.2 billion.

시장의 예상치는 42억 달러이지만 우리는 회사의 매출이 41억에서 45억 달러 사이가 될 것으로 예상합니다.

SITUATION 시장의‘기대치’를 표현할 때

평범하게 The third quarter GDP came out slightly lower than investors expected.

영어답게 The third quarter GDP came out slightly below the market consensus.

consensus는 con+sensus(sense)로 구성된 단어로, ‘같은 생각을 한다’는 의미에서 유래했습니다. 외래어 ‘컨센서스’로 그냥 쓰기도 하는데, 시장에서 투자자들이 공유하고 있는 생각이나 전망을 market consensus, street consensus라고 하죠. 분석가나 투자자들의 공통된 전망을 의미하며, 시장의 예상을 상회했다고 말할 때는 beat the market consensus처럼 표현합니다.

A: Given the current valuation in the market of the company’s stock, we are only able to offer you $20 million for the sale of your company.

B: That’s next to nothing. You should also consider the company’s potential profits and extensive intellectual property portfolio.

A: 회사의 주식에 대한 시장의 현재 가치 평가를 고려해 보면 귀사를 인수하는 데 2천만 달러를 지불할 수 있을 뿐입니다.

B: 그 금액은 의미가 없는 것이나 마찬가지입니다. 회사의 잠재적 이익과 다양한 지적재산권도 고려하셔야 합니다.

SITUATION 현재 주가가 적정한지 설명할 때

평범하게 The current stock price for the company is lower than its fair value.

영어답게 The current valuations in the market for the company are weak.

value는 ‘가치’이고 valuation은 ‘가치 평가’를 뜻합니다. 회사의 주식은 대부분 실제 가격과 일치하지 않는 가치를 지닌 것으로 평가되는데, 이때의 가치를 valuation이라고 하죠. 현재 거래되는 주가가 그 가치보다 싸다면 주식이 저평가된 것이므로 향후 주가 상승을 기대할 수 있을 것입니다. 이런 경우에 The valuation is pretty attractive.처럼 말할 수 있습니다.

A: Why do you think stock prices have been stagnant recently?

B: With all the uncertainties in the market, stock prices for the time being will continue to move sideways.

A: 최근에 왜 주가가 정체된 것 같아?

B: 시장 불확실성 때문에 주가가 당분간 횡보할 거야.

SITUATION ‘주가 횡보’를 표현할 때

평범하게 Stock prices for the time being will not change very much.

영어답게 Stock prices for the time being will continue to move sideways.주가가 급등하면 skyrocket, 폭락하면 plummet이라는 단어를 써서 표현할 수 있죠. 주가가 횡보하는 경우, ‘옆으로 움직인다’는 의미로 move sideways라고 합니다.

The founding members of the company are holding off liquidating the majority of their stock options to avoid stock overhang.

회사의 창립 멤버들은 시장에 많은 물량이 풀리는 것을 막기 위해 스톡 옵션의 처분을 미루고 있습니다.

SITUATION 시장에 나올 물량이 있는 경우

평범하게 Stocks to be sold soon are likely to put downward pressure on the price.

영어답게 Stock overhang is likely to put downward pressure on the price.

overhang은 다소 낯선 단어처럼 보이지만 주식 투자와 관련해서는 많이 접할 수 있는 말입니다. overhang은 원래 밖으로 튀어나와 있는 것을 뜻하는데, 주식과 관련된 overhang은 추가로 시장에 풀릴 물량이 있어 주식 가치가 희석될 수도 있는 상황을 의미합니다. 앞으로 얼마의 물량이 시장이 나오는지는 주가를 결정하는 중요한 요인이므로, 투자자나 분석가는 overhang에 관심을 갖기 마련이죠.

As we speak, the board of directors is discussing the lucrative tender offer that another company has made to completely buy out the company.

제가 말씀드리고 있는 이 시점에, 우리 회사를 전부 사들이겠다는 다른 회사의 인수 제의를 이사회가 논의하고 있습니다.

SITUATION 기업 인수를 제의할 때

평범하게 The company announced an official plan to buy 100% of the software maker’s shares.

영어답게 The company announced a tender offer to buy 100% of the software maker’s shares.

tender는 형용사로 부드럽다는 뜻이지만, 명사로는 ‘입찰’을, 동사로는 ‘입찰에 참여하다’라는 의미를 지닙니다. tender offer는 ‘입찰 제안’이라는 뜻인데, 기업의 주식을 인수하겠다는 ‘인수 제의’를 가리킵니다.
