Korea's consumer goods losing ground in China

China's imports of consumer goods from South Korea all shrank except for a handful of products despite a rise in demand for similar goods made in other countries, a report from a trade group said Tuesday.

The report from the Beijing office of the Korea International Trade Association said South Korea accounted for 3 percent of all consumer goods imported by China in the January-July period of this year.


Detailed data for the top 20 consumer products showed that global shipments to China during the months increased in monetary volume, including automobiles, headphones and earphones, deli foods, napkins, leather bags, milk and cream, and cotton T-shirts, but they all fell for South Korean goods. The only increases were in cosmetics, shoes, beer and roasted coffee, according to the latest findings.

Cosmetics remained strong, with South Korea ranking as the top exporter for China at $690 million. The amount is equal to 28.5 percent of China's total imports of cosmetics.

TV cameras were also one of the key products for South Korea, $440 million worth of them being shipped to China to rank second after Japan. This accounted for 18 percent of all TV cameras imported by the world's No. 2 economy. (Yonhap)
