A delegation of lawmakers from South Korea's ruling party will visit the United States this week to meet with the transition team of US President-elect Donald Trump and discuss policy issues related to the Korean Peninsula, party officials said Sunday.
The Saenuri Party delegation led by Rep. Won Yoo-chul will visit the US from Monday through Friday and meet with key officials from the transition team and the Republican Party, including former House Speaker Newt Gingrich and Rep. Ed Royce (R-CA), chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee.
"In step with Trump's 'America First' policy, we will deliver South Korea's position from a 'Korea First' perspective, including the need to bolster the US' extended deterrence in the wake of North Korea's fifth nuclear test and our thoughts on going nuclear," Won said.
The delegation also plans to hear the thoughts of the transition team and the Republican Party on the role of the US and China in resolving the North Korean nuclear issue going forward, he said, citing the U.N. Security Council's recent adoption of tightened sanctions against Pyongyang.
The other members of the delegation are Reps. Kim Se-yeon, Ahn Sang-soo, Lee Hye-hoon, Yoon Young-seok and Baek Seung-joo. They will each be responsible for handling issues related to interparty diplomacy, trade, the Korea-US free trade agreement, interparliamentarian diplomacy and US forces in the South. Won will handle the North Korean nuclear issue.
Ahead of their visit, the delegation met with senior officials from South Korea's foreign, defense and trade ministries on Nov. 23 to learn about the Trump transition team's key areas of interest. (Yonhap)
