Only 1 percent of South Korea’s energy is renewable, such as solar, wind and tidal energy, despite the global trend to reduce greenhouse gas, data showed Wednesday.

According to the Renewables Information 2015 report by the International Energy Agency, Korea’s rate of renewable energy use out of its total primary energy supply was tallied at 1.1 percent, the lowest out of 34 Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development countries and far less than the OECD average rate of 9.2 percent.

Korea’s rate of renewable energy use has stalled for the last 25 years since 1990.

Experts say the low rate of renewable energy use is due the government’s lackluster efforts for green energy and the continued use of cheaper nuclear energy and coal power to supply increasing energy demands.
