2013년 한 해 가장 많이 불법 다운로드된 영화가 ‘호빗: 뜻밖의 여정’으로 나타났다고 IT전문매체 씨넷이 지난 2일 전했다.
세계 최대 공유 프로그램인 토렌토의 통계를 매년 내고 있는 토렌트프리크는 2012년 개봉한 ‘호빗’이 지난해 토렌트에서 다운된 횟수가 840만 회를 넘는다고 추정했다. ‘호빗’에 이어 ‘장고: 분노의 추적자’가 810만 회, ‘분노의 질주: 더 맥시멈’가 790만 회를 기록했다.
불법 다운로드는 온라인에서 익명으로 이루어지는 경우가 많아 정확한 통계치는 알기 어렵지만 토렌트프리크측은 “여러 경로를 통해 추정치를 낼 수 있었다”고 밝혔다. 2012년에는 ‘아바타’ ‘다크 나이트’ ‘트랜스포머’가 가장 많이 불법 다운로드된 영화로 선정된 바 있다.
반면 올해는 전세계적으로 흥행을 이끈 ‘헝거게임: 캣칭 파이어’와 ‘맨 오브 스틸’은 불법 다운로드 상위 10위에 들지 못했다.
이번에 공개된 수치는 여전히 영화 불법 다운로드가 온라인에서 성행하고 있음을 보여준다. 특히 나라마다 개봉일이 달랐거나 특정 국가에서 미개봉된 영화의 불법 다운로드 횟수가 많은 것으로 나타났다.
불법 다운로드가 영화 산업을 저해한다는 논쟁이 계속되고 있으나 토렌트프리크측은 미국 박스오피스가 지난해와 비슷한 수준으로 110억 달러의 매출을 기록했다고 전했다.

“The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey” was the most pirated movie in 2013 with 8.4 million downloads, according to TorrentFreak, a website reporting the latest news on copyright and privacy.
TorrentFreak released a list of the world’s 10 most-pirated movies in 2013 from torrent sites, based off information from public BitTorrent trackers.
Following “The Hobbit,” “Django Unchained,” “Fast and Furious 6” and “Iron Man 3” came in at second, third and fourth with 8.1 million, 7.9 million and 7.6 million downloads, respectively.
Most of movies on the list are action or male-oriented films, according to the report.
TorrentFreak said some of the year’s top grossing movies, like “The Hunger Games: Catching Fire” and “Man of Steel,” failed to be included.
“Avatar,” “The Dark Knight” and “Transformers” topped the list of the most pirated movies of 2012.
