The Hanwha Eagles announced Wednesday the signing of new pitcher Caleb Clay to a one-year deal.

The Korea Baseball Organization (KBO) team said Clay, a 24-year-old right-hander, signed for $250,000, along with $50,000 in a signing bonus.

Clay was drafted by the Boston Red Sox in 2006 but has never played in Major League Baseball (MLB). In seven minor league seasons for affiliates of the Red Sox and later the Washington Nationals, Clay has gone 26-33 with a 4.19 ERA in 147 games, 77 of them being starts.

In 2013 for the Nationals' Triple-A club in Syracuse, Clay was 5-2 with a 2.49 ERA in 83 innings. He struck out 51 and walked 14.

According to the Eagles, Clay, listed at 188 centimeters and 82 kilograms, can throw his fastball around 140 kilometers per hour. He also has a cutter, slider, curve and changeup.

The team said Clay will join the training camp that opens in Okinawa, Japan, on Jan. 15 next year.

Earlier this week, the Eagles signed former MLB outfielder Felix Pie.

The KBO last week decided to add an extra spot on teams' active rosters starting next season. Teams other than the two expansion clubs, the NC Dinos and the KT Wiz, can now carry up to three foreign players on their active roster, with two of them allowed to play at the same time. The Dinos, which entered the KBO in 2013, and the Wiz, which will join the league in 2015, will each be permitted an extra foreign player for their first two seasons.

The Eagles have already parted ways with their two foreign pitchers from 2013: Dana Eveland and Denny Bautista.

So far, the Nexen Heroes, the Lotte Giants and the Dinos have filled up their quotas. (Yonhap News)
