Fake sign language interpreter at Mandela’s memorial to face probe
The allegedly fake sign language interpreter at Nelson Mandela’s memorial on Tuesday is to face a probe from the South African government amid escalating criticism from the deaf community.
Those who gathered to honor Mandela’s life were outraged at the news that the interpreter was a fraud.
Though the country’s 11 official languages each have a counterpart in South African sign language, the interpreter’s movements belonged to no existing language, said sign language experts including Bruno Druchen, the national director of the Deaf Federation of South Africa.
Described as “trying to swat a few flies away,” the interpreter had been mired in similar complaints in the past, without any action taken by the ruling African National Congress party.
The South African government said an investigation is underway, but it seems unlikely that it will come up with any result ahead of Mandela’s upcoming funeral on Sunday.
