South Korean singer Kim Jang-hoon plans to hold an event in New York celebrating Hangeul Day, also known as Korean Alphabet Day, Kim’s agency announced Monday.

Kim’s agency Concert World said that Kim and KAUSE, a Korean student association at New York University, would give out 600 t-shirts with Hangeul written on them as part of the planned event on Wednesday. The t-shirts will be handed out to students in Washington Square Park and NYU Kimmel Center.

Hangul Day, which falls on Wednesday, is a Korean national holiday commemorating Hangul, the native Korean alphabet, which was invented by King Sejong during the Joseon era.

“NYU is a place where students from all over the world are gathered in one place,” said Lee Joo-ho, a student of KAUSE. “If students are wearing t-shirts with Hangeul written on them, Hangeul will be recognized by more people.”

Kim gave a lecture at the university early in 2013, at which students expressed their intention to publicize Korea. Kim is also preparing for an exhibition on Hangeul font for professional graphic designers in New York with NYU students.

The 47-year-old singer is widely known for his activities publicizing Korea’s sovereignty claim to the easternmost islets of Dokdo.
