익산경찰서가 16일 홈페이지를 통해 “약촌 오거리 택시기사 살인사건”에 대한 공식 입장을 밝혔다. 익산경찰서는 “엄격하고 충실하게 당시 수사상황을 재 검토하여 억울한 사법적 피해의 발생 가능성에 대해 최선을 다해 조치할 것을 약속 드린다”고 전했다. 

15일 SBS 시사프로그램 ‘그것이 알고싶다’를 통해 이 사건이 방송 나간 직후, 사건에 대한 비난 여론이 거세게 일었다. 

당시 15세 동네 다방에서 배달하던 최 군은 경찰의 협박과 폭력 때문에 허위 진술 했다고 주장했지만, 재판부는 최군에게 10년 형을 선고했다.

이후 최군이 3년째 수감 생활을 이어오던 중, 군산 경찰서는 진짜 범인을 검거하면서 논란이 됐다. 현재 최군은 출소 후 재심청구를 준비하고 있다.

Police to reinvestigate murder after teen found innocent

Iksan Police Station in North Jeolla Province said on Sunday it would reinvestigate the murder of a taxi driver after claims that the police may have forced a confession from an innocent teenager. 

The move came after claims made on SBS investigative program “Unanswered Question” on Saturday.

The 15-year-old delivery boy insisted during his trial that the police forced him to make a false statement, but he was sentenced to 10 years in prison. 

After the teen had spent three years behind bars, Gunsan Police Station said that it had caught the real criminal. Following his discharge from prison, the victim has been preparing to file a suit for damages.
