이용우 광주비엔날레 대표이사가 세계비엔날레 협회 초대회장에 선출됐다

세계비엔날레협회는 지난 15일 아랍에미레이트의 샤자에서 창립준비위원회의를 열고 임기 3년의 이용우 회장과 부회장 2명을 선출해 협회 출범을 공식 선언했다.

세계비엔날레협회의 출범은 비엔날레 역사 118년 만에 처음이다. 세계비엔날레협회는 지난해 10월 광주에서 처음 열린 세계비엔날레대회에서 세계 150여 개 비엔날레 간 간의 교류 협력의 필요성이 강력히 요구되면서 창립됐다

조인성 광주비엔날레 정책연구실장은 “비엔날레 역사의 뿌리인 유럽을 제치고 후발주자인 한국에서 세계비엔날레협회 회장이 배출된 것은 이례적인 일”이라고 밝혔다.

이용우 대표는 옥스퍼드대학원에서 미학미술사로 박사학위를 받았고 고려대 교수, 대학교 초빙교수를 역임하였다. 그는 1995년 제 1회 광주비엔날레의 전시기획실장을 맡았으며, 베니스비엔날레에서 “호랑이 꼬리전”을 기획하는 등 새로운 매체의 확장에 따른 시각문화의 전환과정을 기술하는 데 연구영역을 집중했다.

이감독은 2004년 광주비엔날레 예술총감독, 2008년 광주비엔날레 상임 부이사장을 거쳐 2011년부터 대표이사를 맡았다. 자서로는 “백남준, 그 치열한 삶과 예술,” “정보와 현실”등이 있다.

Lee Yong-woo appointed president of International Biennale Association

The founding director and current president of the Gwangju Biennale Lee Yong-woo is now president of the International Biennial Association (IBA).

On March 15, IBA held a conference meeting at Sharjah, United Arab Emirates, where Lee was appointed to serve a three-year term as the association’s president.

International Biennial Association was established last October at the first World Biennial Forum which took place in Gwangju. The forum saw an initiative to link 150 biennials around the world for global exchange, collaboration and research.

Lee was a professor of art history and visual culture at Korea University until 1998 and served as the executive director of the New York Center for New Media Art. He was also a Korean commissioner for the Venice Biennale’s special exhibition “Tiger’s Tail” in 1995 and the curator of “Electronic Maple,” an inaugural exhibition at the New York Center for Media Arts.

Lee is also a contemporary art critic, focusing on media art. He has published several books on new media art, including audience studies, his works include “Paik Nam-june,” “On Video Art,” and“Information and Reality.”
