Korean universities have gained ground in a recent global ranking due largely to increased funding,

In the latest edition of the Times Higher Education World University rankings published Thursday (Korea time), Pohang University of Science and Technology rose to 50th place from 53rd last year.

Seoul National University soared to 59th from 124th and Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology improved its ranking to 68th from 94th.

Yonsei University, which failed to make the top 200 last year, also climbed up to 183rd place.

The annual survey is one of the most authoritative indicators of university quality and reputation. It uses 13 separate performance indicators to examine core missions, including teaching, research, knowledge transfer and international outlook.

California Institute of Technology has retained its top place this year, followed by the University of Oxford and Stanford University, which shared second place. Harvard University fell to fourth from second last year.

“This has been a great year for South Korea, all four of its top 200 institutions have improved their positions,” said Phil Baty, editor of Times Higher Education rankings.

He told The Korea Herald that the Korean institutions, in particular, have shown strong indicators in the academic reputation survey also Citation Impact scores, which reflect citations to recent articles published in journals.

“The overall factor behind the strong performance is mostly driven by the financial situation in Korea, where the most prestigious institutions are some of the best funded in the world when factoring in the size of the institution,” he added.

포스텍, 세계대학평가 50위권 진입

포스텍이 영국 더타임즈가 실시한 2012년 세계 대학평가에서 50위권에 올라 명실상부 국내 최고 이공대학으로 자리매김했다.

영국 더타임즈와 연구평가기관인 톰슨-로이터사가 4일 오전(한국시간) 발표한 이번 대학평가에서 포스텍은 연구실적, 논문인용도 등에서 우수한 평가를 받아, 지난해 53위에서 3계단 상승한 50위에 올랐다.

이번 평가에서 포스텍을 비롯 국내 4개 대학이 모두 200위권 내에 진입했으며, 특히 서울대가 지난해 124위에서 59위로 높은 평가를 받았다. 이밖에 카이스트가 68위, 또 지난해 200위권 밖이었던, 연세대가 183위에 올랐다.

이밖에 미국의 칼텍(캘리포니아공과대)이 지난해에 이어 1위를, 옥스퍼드와, 스탠퍼드대가 공동 2위, 뒤를 이어 지난해 2위였던 하버드가 4위에 머물렀다.
