Teachers sought for English camp

June 27, 2012 - 20:06 By Korea Herald
Volunteers are being sought to help at an English camp for underprivileged kids in mid-July.

This year’s Mustard Seed English Camp will be held on July 14-15, with 150 underprivileged kids from all over Seoul attending. Up to 40 native English speakers are needed for Saturday, and up to 20 for Sunday.

The Mustard Seed volunteer group offers regular English lessons for kids from low-income and single-parent families at two centers in Sindaebang and Sillim.

Korean mothers and students organize the camp each year, but ask for help from native English speakers to teach the kids.

“This camp is a wonderful opportunity for underprivileged kids from all over Seoul to have an English camp experience,” said Mustard Seed Volunteer Leader Brad Curtin. “Without all the volunteers who share their time and efforts, it just couldn’t happen. The English native speakers who attend are very important for the success of the camp.”

After an orientation at the school near Sillim Station on Saturday, classes will be held using prepared camp textbook materials. A market will also be held for kids to buy and sell things, followed by some sports activities.

On Sunday, volunteers will be invited to teach a one-hour class in English on various topics such as yoga, dance, soccer, art, music or drama. A T-shirt and lunch will be provided for all camp volunteers.

A preparatory meeting will be held on July 9 at 9 p.m at the Starbucks near Itaewon Subway Station’s Exit 3.

Anyone wishing to attend should register at www.facebook.com/events/385027181555544 and email bradcurtin@hotmail.com. Registration e-mails should include name, phone number, email address, T-shirt size, and what day you will attend.

Volunteers can also indicate if they wish to assist in creating the camp textbook, and if they would like to teach a special class.
