A U.S. lawmaker introduced a bill to provide U.S. citizenship for children of the U.S. servicemen who were born overseas during the Korean War (1950-1953) and the Vietnam War (1955-1975).
Rep. Zoe Lofgren (D-California) referred the bill to the House Committee on the Judiciary on April 27, with cosponsors from the Democratic Party including Reps. Gerald Connolly, John Conyers, Michael “Mike” Honda, James “Jim” McDermott and Loretta Sanchez.
Conyers is a Korean War veteran.
The bill seeks to amend the Immigration and Nationality Act to automatically give U.S. citizenship to children of the U.S. war veterans living overseas during their stay in the U.S.

`한국전 혼혈2세‘ 시민권 법안 美의회 제출
(워싱턴=연합뉴스) 이승관 특파원 = 한국전에 참전했던 미군 장병과 한국 여성 사이에서 태어난 자녀에게 미국 시민권을 자동으로 부여토록 하는 내용의 법안이 미 연방의회에 제출됐다.
1일(현지시간) 미 의회에 따르면 조 로프그렌(민주ㆍ캘리포니아) 하원의원은 지난달 27일 이런 내용의 이민법 및 국적법 개정안을 제출했다.
이 법안은 한국전 참전용사인 존 코니어스(미시간) 의원을 비롯해 제럴드 코널리(버지니아), 마이클 혼다(캘리포니아), 짐 맥더모트(워싱턴), 로레타 산체스(캘리포니아) 의원 등 민주당 `지한파’ 의원들이 공동 발의했다.
현재 하원 법사위로 넘어간 이 법안은 한국전과 베트남전 기간 현지에서 출생한 미군 병사의 자녀들이 미국으로 입국하거나 체류하는 경우 자동으로 시민권을 부여하는 것을 골자로 한다.
