A former female prosecutor was found to have used her influence to unfairly help a private-practice lawyer win his case in return for a luxury sedan and a designer handbag, Busan Prosecutors said Wednesday.

The 36-year-old prosecutor, who resigned from office in a city near Seoul earlier this month, pressed a fellow prosecutor late last year to advance the criminal case in favor of the Busan-based lawyer surnamed Choi, according to the Busan District Prosecutors' Office.
The 49-year-old lawyer had filed a criminal suit against two former partners involved in a construction project in China. The case was pending at a local police station at that time.
In return, the lawyer purportedly bought her a Chanel handbag worth 5.4 million won (US$4,700) and a Mercedes-Benz sedan, the prosecutors said.
She can be charged with taking bribes if prosecutors prove a clear connection between the gifts and the favor given to the lawyer, and Choi could also be charged with providing bribes, the prosecutors said.
The latest scandal added to public outrage here over widely-perceived corruption within the prosecution agency, which also faces accusations of frequently conducting politically biased investigations.
In a bid to quell mushrooming skepticism, the prosecution made the rare move of appointing a high-level prosecutor to throughly investigate the scandal.
"After the specially-appointed prosecutor wraps up an initial investigation, we will probably summon her (for further questioning)," a prosecution official in Busan said. (Yonhap News)

'벤츠 女검사', 변호사 사건 청탁 사실로 드러나
부장판사 출신 변호사 최모(49)씨로부터 벤츠 승용차를 받아 물의를 빚은 여검사가 이 변호사의 사건과 관련해 동료 검사에게 청 탁했다는 의혹이 사실로 드러났다.
30일 부산지검에 따르면 최근 수도권의 한 검찰청에서 사표를 낸 이모(36·여) 검사가 지난해 10~11월 창원지검의 동료 검사에게 전화해 최씨가 고소한 사건이 빨 리 처리됐으면 좋겠다는 취지로 말했다.
문제의 사건은 최씨가 지난해 9월 중국에서 자신의 건설업을 돕던 2명을 횡령 등의 혐의로 경남지역 경찰에 고소한 것이다.
당시 동료 검사는 으레 "예, 예, 알겠습니다"라고 답했고, 구속영장 청구 등은 운운하지 않았다고 밝혔다.
이 사건 진정서에 따르면 이 검사는 지난해 10월8일과 11월22일 최씨에게 문자 메시지로 "(사건담당 검사에게) 뜻대로 전달했고, 영장청구도 고려해보겠다고 한다" , "000 검사에게 말해뒀으니 그렇게 알라"고 말했다.
이 검사는 또 지난해 11월30일과 12월6일 최씨에게 문자 메시지로 "샤넬 핸드백 값 540만원을 보내달라"며 은행계좌 번호를 알려줬고, 이 사이 12월5일에는 서울 강 남의 한 백화점에서 이 액수에 상응하는 539만원이 최씨 법인카드로 결제됐다.
여검사가 사건청탁의 대가로 명품 가방을 받았을 수 있다는 의미다. 사건청탁과 명품 가방 수수 사이에 대가성이 입증되면 이 검사를 알선수뢰 혐의로, 최씨는 뇌물 공여 혐의로 각각 처벌할 수 있다.
부산지검의 한 관계자는 또 "최 변호사가 검사장급 인사에게 자신이 고소한 다 른 사건을 청탁했다는 의혹과 관련해 당시 사건 담당 부장검사와 평검사는 '검사장 이 해당 사건에 대해 아무런 언급을 하지 않았다'고 말했다"고 전했다.
그는 이어 "이 검사와 어렵게 연락이 닿았다"면서 "특임검사가 기초조사를 끝내 면 소환해서 조사할 것으로 안다"고 말했다.
