Schmidt in Seoul to meet Samsung executives, CEOs of telecom carriers
Attention is being paid to the visit by Google chairman Eric Schmidt to Seoul on Monday, which experts said is aimed at forging a stronger partnership with local electronics and telecommunication giants.
Government officials and tech industry analysts are speculating that the Google founder may bring “gifts” for the nation’s IT scene.
As if to reflect the special attention, Korea Communication Commission chief Choi See-joong expressed his hope that the chairman’s visit results in major agreements on cooperation in IT sector.
“If chairman Schmidt doesn’t carry any gift, I wouldn’t let him get off the plane,” KCC chairman Choi joked during his visit last week to the headquarters of Google Korea in southern Seoul. “Google has been leading the global IT industry. I hope the company will play such a role in Korea as well.”
According to industry sources, the Google chief is scheduled to meet CEOs of the nation’s three telecom carriers ― KT, SK Telecom and LG Uplus ― and executives of tech companies such as Samsung Electronics and LG Electronics.
Choi of the state-run telecom regulator is also on the list of Korean figures whom Schmidt will meet during his two-day visit to Seoul.
It is not still known what he will speak about during the press conference on Tuesday. But it is expected among industry observers that Schmidt will share the recent trend of the global IT industry, future vision of Google services and possibly new partnerships with Korean companies.
The main topics to be discussed at the separate meetings with CEOs of telecom carriers are expected to include mobile payment services and other Android-based mobile services, according to sources.
“On Monday, vice chairman Lee Sang-chul will discuss the Google Wallet services based on the financial infrastructure of LG Uplus and the near field communication solutions,” said an official of LG Uplus, the telecom unit of LG Group, on Sunday.
“They will also seek ways to provide Korean Wave content via YouTube and HD video services for high-speed LTE devices.”
Schmidt is also likely to further strengthen partnerships with local partners such as Samsung and LG whose mobile devices are equipped with its Android mobile operating system.
Of the nation’s 20 million smartphone users, about 13 million are believed to use handsets based on the Android OS.
The sources said the Google leader may feel the need to further strengthen Android alliance including Samsung in its intensifying patent battle with Apple.
This is the second time that the owner of the world’s most popular search engine has visited Korea since 2007. And over the years the status of Google has been totally different.
The California-based company has launched the Android operating system, competing with the powerful Apple’s iOS.
Other than the search engine Google, the company has developed diverse Internet-based services such as Google Maps and Google Wallet and become the operator of YouTube.
In August, the company succeeded in acquiring Motorola Mobility, expanding business as handset maker.

구글의 에릭 슈미트(56) 회장이 7일 내한해 국 내 통신•전자 업계 CEO들을 잇따라 만날 계획이어서 업계의 관심이 집중되고 있다.
6일 업계에 따르면 슈미트 회장은 7일부터 이석채 KT 회장, 하성민 SK 텔레콤 대표, 이상철 LG유플러스(U+) 부회장 등 이동통신 3사 CEO 와 삼성전자, LG전자 등 제조사 대표들, 최시중 방송통신위원장 등 을 만날 계획이다.
슈미트 회장은 2007년 이미 한 차례 내한해 국내 IT업계 인사들과 면담한 바 있 지만 지난 4년 사이 세계 IT 업계에서 구글이 차지하는 위상이 크게 달라진 만큼 이 번 방문은 특히 큰 주목을 받고 있다.
구글은 그 사이 스마트폰 운영체계(OS)인 안드로이드를 선보여 iOS의 애플과 함 께 세계 스마트폰 OS 시장을 양분했으며 검색엔진 '구글' 외에 구글 맵스, 구글 플 러스, 구글 월릿(Wallet•지갑)과 무료 동영상 공유사이트 유튜브를 갖춰 '구글 제 국'으로 자리를 잡았다.
특히 지난 8월에는 세계 최초의 상업용 휴대전화 제조사 모토로라를 인수하며 영역을 소프트웨어에서 하드웨어로까지 넓혔다. 특히 스티브 잡스의 사퇴와 사망으 로 애플의 리더십이 흔들리는 상황에서 구글의 영향력은 점점 더 커지고 있다.
슈미트 회장은 이번 방한 기간에 이통사들과는 모바일 결제 시스템, NFC(근거리 무선통신), 동영상 서비스 등 모바일 인터넷 분야 전반에서 협력 방안을 논의할 것 으로 보인다.
LG U+ 관계자는 "이상철 부회장이 LG U+의 금융 인프라를 활용한 국내 구글 월 렛 서비스를 공동 추진하고 NFC 응용사업을 전개하는 방안에 대해 논의할 것"이라면 서 "구글 유튜브를 위한 한류 콘텐츠 소싱과 LTE(롱텀에볼루션)에서의 HD급 유튜브 서비스 등 프리미엄 서비스를 공동 개발하는 방안도 모색할 것"이라고 설명했다.
안드로이드 진영의 주요 멤버인 삼성전자와 LG전자의 경우 향후 협력관계를 공 고히 할 방안을 논의할 전망이다.
이에 대해서는 구글이 현재의 안드로이드에 대해 내세우고 있는 개방 정책이 애 플과 같은 폐쇄 정책으로 변할지가 주목을 받고 있는 상황이다.
구글은 OS는 개방하면서 광고에서 수익을 거두는 정책을 고수해왔지만 사업구조 를 개선하려는 움직임이 심상치 않게 일고 있다.
안드로이드 진영의 결속력, 혹은 삼성전자•LG전자와의 유대 관계에 변화가 있 을 수 있는 상황인 만큼 이 부분에 대해 국내 업체와 어떤 이야기가 오갈지도 관심 이다.
최시중 위원장은 슈미트 회장에게 국내 IT업계에 대한 투자와 협력을 당부할 것 으로 예상된다.
최 위원장은 지난달 말 구글코리아를 방문해 "구글이 선도적 기업으로서 글로벌 IT를 이끌고 있는 만큼, 한국에서도 같은 역할을 해달라. 슈미트 회장이 선물을 가지고 오지 않으면 비행기에서 내리지 못하게 하겠다"고 농담을 섞었지만 뼈 있는 이야기를 했다. (연합뉴스)
