SEOUL, Oct. 26 (Yonhap) -- Apple Inc. applied for a radio wave certificate at a South Korean national agency for its new iPhone 4S on Wednesday, signaling an imminent domestic launch of its latest smartphone.
An official at the National Radio Search Agency, which oversees and certifies the radio wave compatibility of imported electronics products, confirmed that Apple submitted the newly minted iPhone 4S to the agency to have it certified before it officially goes on sale.
The certification process usually takes one week, which will make the iPhone 4S ready to go on sale as early as November in South Korea.
Apple sold more than 4 million iPhone 4S smartphones during the first three days of its launch in seven countries, it said.
The iPhone 4S, shipped with the latest mobile operating system from Apple, was one of the last products created during Steve Jobs' lifetime. He died on Oct. 5.
The latest iPhone is scheduled to be released in 22 more countries on Friday, according to Apple, but the U.S. company did not disclose its launching schedule for the South Korean market.
The imminent iPhone 4S launch will likely coincide with the two-year anniversary of Apple's iPhone debut in South Korea and it could attract the previous iPhone buyers whose two-year contracts with mobile carriers are nearing an end. The first iPhone went officially on sale in the Asian country in November 2009.
Samsung Electronics Co., Apple's archrival, is scheduled to kick off sales of the Galaxy Nexus smartphone next month as well, likely pitting the new model against Apple's device.
The Korean firm, which filed motions to block sales of the iPhone 4S in four countries citing patent violations, is "reviewing" whether it will make a similar move to stop the new iPhone sales in its home country, its mobile president Shin Jong-kyun said on Oct. 18.

애플이 새 아이폰인 '아이폰4S'의 전파인증을 신청했다.
26일 업계에 따르면 애플은 25일 국립전파연구원에 아이폰4S에 대한 전파인증을 신청했다.
전파인증 기간은 통상 1주일 정도가 소요되는 만큼, 다음 달 초 전파인증을 통 과하면 11월 중으로 국내에 시판할 수 있을 것으로 보인다.
업계에서는 아이폰4S가 전파인증을 통과하지 못할 가능성은 거의 없는 것으로 보고 있다.
이달 초 미국에서 공개된 아이폰4S는 애플 창업주인 스티브 잡스의 사망과 맞물 려 판매 첫 주말 사흘 동안 400만대 이상 팔렸다.
국내에서도 스티브 잡스 추모 열기가 상당한데다, 지난 2009년 말에 '아이폰3GS '를 산 이용자들이 약정 기간 만료를 앞두고 있기 때문에 아이폰4S 판매량이 상당할 것으로 예상된다.
KT 관계자는 "11-12월 중으로 약정이 만료되는 아이폰3GS 이용 고객 20 만명을 비롯해 아이폰4S를 기다리는 고객을 상대로 판매에 힘을 다하겠다"고 밝혔다 .
SK텔레콤 관계자도 "아이폰4S 출시에 대비해 준비는 하고 있지만, 구체 적인 출시일자는 아직 정해지지 않았다"며 "3세대(3G) 시장과 4세대(4G) 시장 모두 놓칠 수 없는 시장으로 보고 3G를 지원하는 아이폰4S 출시에도 만반의 준비를 할 계 획"이라고 말했다.
