MIAMI (AP) -- A Florida woman got a shock when she opened a recent mobile phone bill: she owed $201,000.

It was no mistake.

Celina Aarons has her two brothers on her plan. They are deaf and cannot speak, so the easiest way for them to communicate is by texting. Normally, that's not a problem. Aarons has a data plan that usually costs about $175.

But her brothers spent two weeks in Canada and Aarons never changed to an international plan. Her brothers sent over 2,000 texts and also downloaded videos, sometimes racking up $2,000 in data charges.

T-Mobile told Aarons the bill was correct. She called Miami TV station WSVN, which contacted T-Mobile. The station reports that T-Mobile cut Aarons' bill to $2,500 and gave her six months to pay.

휴대전화 요금이 2억원, 여성사용자 경악



미국에서도 휴대전화 데이터 '요금 폭탄'을 맞은  사례 가 발생했다.

 플로리다 남부에 사는 한 여성은 최근 휴대전화 요금 고지서를 받고 깜짝  놀랐다. 총 20만 1천 달러 (한화 약 2억 3천만 원)의 요금이 청구된 것이다.

 샐리나 아론스라는 이 여성은 두 명의 농아 형제들과 공동의 요금제를 사용해왔 다. 그들은 문자 메시지로 소통하고 휴대전화를 이용해 동영상을 시청한다. 이를 위 해 적절한 요금제에 가입한 아론스는 월 175달러(약 20만 원)의 요금을 냈다.

 하지만 그녀의 형제들이 2주간 캐나다에서 지내는 동안 국제 요금제로 변경하지 않은 것이 문제였다. 2천 건 이상의 문자 메시지를 사용했고 한번에 2천 달러(약 229만 원)가 넘는 동영상을 내려받기도 했다.

 미국 이동통신사 티모바일(T-Mobile)은 아론스에게 청구된 요금에 이상이  없다 고 말했다.

 아론스의 제보를 받고 이 문제를 취재한 마이애미의 WSVN TV는 그러나 티모바일 이 결국 아론스의 요금을 2천500 달러(약 286만 원)로 줄여줬고 납부도 6개월내에 할 수 있도록 조치했다고 보도했다.
