The Korean Red Cross on Thursday said that it has nominated Yu Jung-keun as its next president.

Yu, 66, has been vice president of the organization since January.

If confirmed by President Lee Myung-bak, Yu will be the first woman president in the Korean Red Cross’ 62-year history.

“Yu was nominated in line with the international trend,” said the Korean Red Cross in a news release.

“Currently, 41 Red Cross branches around the world are led by women. We thought her nomination would encourage more women to engage in charity and volunteering activities.”

Yu previously served as chairwoman of a foundation for arts and culture. She started Red Cross activities in 1998, and held positions including head of the special division for women volunteers, auditor of the advisory group and vice president.

“Yu is a perfect fit because she knows the organization inside out,” said the Korean Red Cross.
