About 200 contemporary works of art by 42 South Korean artists are currently on display at Seoul Arts Center’s Hangaram Art Museum in Seocho-dong, southern Seoul.

Titled “Korea Tomorrow 2011,” the exhibition aims to showcase the dynamic side of Korean contemporary art and identify its global status and value. Organized by Hzone and Gallery Labyrinthe, the annual show marks its third year. 

Paintings, installations, sculptures and media works by veteran artists including Kim Duck-yong as well as up-and-coming artists like Dorothy M Yoon, Jang Seung-hyo and Lee Wan who are seen to have great potential to lead Korean contemporary art in the future are showcased. Most of the exhibits were newly created for this show.

“I am confident that we can show the world the differentiated meanings, functions and status of Korean contemporary art at a time when we cannot be free from globalism,” said Lee Dae-hyung, head of curating company Hzone.

The organizers said that the show is structured to best show the characteristics of each artist as well as dividing it into five sections ― “Womad Code,” “Reconstruction of Korean Beauty,” “CounterFAKE,” “Outsider Gaze” and “Deja-View.” Among the sections, “Womad Code,” which signifies Woman + Nomad, presents contemporary women and their changed roles and identities.
