With the Chuseok holidays just around the corner, a married couple committed suicide together in a motel room after suffering from poverty.

The owner of the motel called the police, who found the couple dead in a motel room in Busan.

The room had been completely sealed with adhesive tape. The officials also found a wallet containing 600,000 won (566 USD) and a note.

“All we have is 800,000 won (866 USD). We do not have the energy to live our lives. Please cremate our bodies,” the note read, according to a Yonhap News report.

The officials are assuming that the couple chose to take their own lives after being despondent about their living conditions.

추석을 앞두고 생활고를 겪던 부부가 모텔에서 함께 목숨을 끊어 주위를 안타깝게 하고 있다.

부산 남부경찰서는 5일 오후 2시께 부산 수영구 광안동의 한 모텔 4층 객실에서 이모(45ㆍ여)씨와 김모(39)씨 부부가 숨진 채로 발견돼 조사중이다"고 6일 밝혔다.

모텔 업주의 신고를 받고 출동한 경찰은 화로에 타다 남은 숯불, 접착테이프로 객실 방문과 창문 틈이 밀폐된 것을 확인했다. 객실에서는 현금 60만원이 든 지갑과 유서도 발견됐다.

숨진 이씨가 작성한 것으로 보이는 유서에는 "전 재산이 80만원 밖에 없다. 더 이상 살 힘이 없어 먼저 간다. 화장해달라"는 내용이 적혀 있었다.

경찰은 재혼한 이씨 부부가 생활고를 비관해 함께 목숨을 끊은 것으로 보고 있다. (연합뉴스)
