A 38-year-old woman has been booked for abandoning her four newborn babies in Namhae, South Gyeongsang Province, local police said.
The mother admitted that she deserted four babies including a 4-day-old boy she gave birth to last month. She was seen on closed-circuit camera leaving her baby in a plastic bag after giving birth to him in a public toilet.
When the officers opened an investigation into other potential misdeeds, they found out that her DNA sample was identical to those of three other abandoned infants in the region during the past few years.
The three children were discovered by social welfare centers and found new homes. The police said the offender already had three children, and made the decisions due to financial difficulties.

(남해=연합뉴스) 30대 후반의 여성이 5년 동안 자신이 낳은 아기를 4명이나 내다버린 사실이 경찰 수사에서 드러났다.
경남 남해경찰서는 지난달 생후 4일된 남자 아이를 공터에 버린 혐의(영아유기)로 불구속 입건한 J(38)씨를 조사해 그녀가 이전에도 3명의 아기를 더 내다버린 사실을 확인했다고 19일 밝혔다.
경찰은 지난달 29일 J씨를 입건한 뒤 그동안 남해군에서 발생한 영아유기 사건과의 연관성을 조사해왔다.
경찰이 J씨의 구강 세포를 국립과학수사연구원에 보내 최근 몇년간 남해에서 버려진 채 발견된 아기 3명과 유전자(DNA)를 대조했다. 그 결과 J씨가 아기들의 생모로 확인됐다.
J씨는 지난달 24일 남해군의 모 복지시설 화장실에서 혼자 출산한 남자아기를 비닐봉지에 담아 인근 공터에 버렸다가 퍠쇄회로TV에 모습이 찍혀 경찰에 붙잡혔다.
그녀는 경찰 조사에서 그에 앞서 2006년 8월, 2008년 8월, 2010년 5월에도 자신이 낳은 남자 아이를 내다버렸다고 진술했다.
버려진 아기 3명은 모두 복지기관을 거쳐 다른 사람에게 입양됐다.
경찰은 “J씨가 ‘현재 3명의 자녀를 키우고 있는데 자녀가 늘면 양육하기 어려워 태어난 아이를 버렸다’고 말했다”고 전했다.
경찰은 J씨가 버린 아기들의 건강에 이상이 없고 그녀가 현재 다른 어린 자녀들을 양육하고 있는 점을 고려해 불구속 입건했다.
