This is a series introducing associations and clubs that expats can get involved in. This week, Expat Living spoke to Marty Nedjelski, founder and CEO of Republic of Korea Ultimate ― Ed.

What goes on?

We play 12 games each in various venues across Korea. The league is a mixed, social league, which means we have a huge range of skills and motivations. Some players come out to get exercise, be competitive and try to win games. Others come out to meet new people and watch the games. Our league consists primarily of expats, but the growing Korean influence on our league is very welcome. Players in this year’s fall league come from 11 different countries.

Plans for the future?

The vision of ROK-U will always remain the same ― always continue to connect communities through sport across the Korean Peninsula. I’d love to see 20 teams across the nation playing in this fun league.

How to join:

At this point, Fall League registration is closed and full to capacity ― but Spring League 2012 (we have a Spring & Fall League, each year) will always involved the same process. First, go to www.rokultimate.com, and click the online registration tab, which is available during registration periods (for spring 2012, this will be December 2011). Register yourself online, and then bank transfer your league fee.

Are there any membership fees?

League Fees are 60,000 won for the season. This includes a customized jersey, 12 games, guaranteed playoff birth, fields & equipment.

What is the highlight of the year?

Highlight this year will definitely be our “Busan Double” weekend (Oct. 22-23), where all the teams will meet and play an epic weekend of Ultimate. Saturday will be on the beach, in Haeundae, and Sunday will be on a sweet turf field in Namcheon.

Thanks to Wolfhound Pub ― who sponsored our league this year with 700,000 won for jerseys and discs ― as well as our Saturday party in Busan, this weekend will be extra fun! Our championships and year-end party (Nov. 12 in Daegu) are always a great time as well.
