A Korean-American wanted for two counts of attempted homicide in the United States was captured in Seoul after running an English-language academy under a false identity.
According to the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency on Monday, the 33-year-old fugitive, identified by his surname Kim, has been wanted by Los Angeles police since 1997.

He is suspected of shooting at two members of a Mexican gang which had been in conflict with a Filipino gang he belonged to in May 1997.
Kim, then 17 years old, fled to Korea in July that year.
In Korea, he acquired the ID of another man surnamed Lee who emigrated to the U.S., with help of relatives. He got a driver’s license and passport with the fake ID and taught English at private institutions called hagwon.
In December 2008, he opened an institute for students preparing for the SAT, an entrance examination for U.S. colleges and universities, in Seoul’s southern district of Gangnam.
Kim also faked a college diploma, posing as a graduate of the University of California, Los Angeles.
According to the Seoul police, Kim’s hagwon ran classes for only a small group of pupils from affluent families in the area. The enrollment fee was 1 million won a month at the lowest.
Police officials said Kim face charges of forgery of private documents and the violation of a law governing the management of private educational institutions. Police also sought an arrest warrant for the person jointly running the hagwon with him.
If the U.S. authorities request his extradition, they will fully cooperate, the police said.

미국에서 살인미수 혐의로 수배돼 10여 년 간 도피 생활을 해 온 갱단 출신 재미교포가 신분을 세탁해 강남에서 어학원을 운영해 오다 적발돼 구속됐다.
서울지방경찰청 국제범죄수사대는 미국 LA 경찰국에서 1급 살인미수 혐의로 수 배됐으나 신분을 세탁하고 강남에서 SAT 전문 어학원을 운영해 온 혐의(사문서 위조 등)로 김모(33)씨를 구속했다고 8일 밝혔다. 학력을 속이고 김씨와 함께 학원을 설 립해 운영한 강모(36)씨에 대해서도 구속영장을 신청했다.
경찰에 따르면 미국에서 태어난 김씨는 1997년 5월 경쟁 관계에 있던 멕시코계 갱단에게 권총을 발사해 1급 살인미수 혐의로 LA 경찰국에 수배됐으나 그해 7월 한국으로 도피했다.
김씨는 이듬해 친척의 도움으로 직권말소 상태인 지인의 이름으로 주민등록을 하고 여권과 운전면허증을 새로 발급받거나 수차례 갱신하면서 34차례에 걸쳐 외국 여행을 다녀온 것으로 조사됐다.
김씨는 또 2008년 12월 영어 강사로 일하며 알게 된 강씨와 강남구 신사동에 SA T 전문 어학원을 차려놓고 미국 명문대학 출신으로 홍보하며 직접 SAT 강의를 하거 나 무자격 영어 강사를 고용해 학생을 가르쳐 왔다.
경찰 관계자는 “어렸을 때 국외로 이주하면 행정 당국에서 본인 여부를 확인할 자료가 부족하다는 점과 간단한 신분확인 절차만 거치면 지문을 등록할 수 있어 신 분세탁이 가능하다는 점을 노렸다”며 “제도 개선이 필요하다”고 밝혔다.
또 “무자격 강사에 대한 처벌 규정이 없고 ‘한국에서는 영어만 하면 돈 벌기 쉽 다’는 인식이 외국인들 사이에 팽배해 무자격 외국인 강사가 공공연히 수업을 하고 있다”며 “학원 법령과 관리ㆍ감독을 강화해야 한다”고 지적했다. (연합뉴스)
