Typhoon Muifa left much of the west coast in ruins, with extreme winds and more torrential rains taking four lives as it made its way north, said the state’s weather agency.
According to the Korea Meteorological Administration on Monday afternoon, the downgraded typhoon was heading into North Korea, just outside of Pyongyang.
Earlier in the week, the ninth typhoon of the season battered the southwestern coast of Korea, leaving at least four dead and two missing, and some 200 people displaced after torrential rains flooded their homes.
Some 150,000 residents in South Jeolla Province experienced power failures, and Jeju Island experienced damage from strong gusts of up to 38 meters per second and 311.5 millimeters of rainfall.
As of late Monday, typhoon warnings, issued earlier in the day, were lifted throughout most of the nation, but many west coast areas will continue to see strong winds and high waves.
Jeju Island was one of those first and hardest hit by the storm, with some 40 residences damaged or deluged, totaling early estimates of some 2.6 billion won in damages.
According to Jeju’s disaster prevention headquarters on Monday, 128 farms and houses were damaged, worth 1.3 billion won ($1.1 million), while another 30 public facilities were destroyed as well, totaling more than 1.2 billion won.
Local cultural heritage site Ilgwanheon was also damaged on the island as a 600-year-old tree broke and fell on the roof, causing one billion won in damages.
According to the Gwangju and South Jeolla Educational Offices, 12 houses throughout the area saw damage as well, with either fences collapsing or walls breaking.
At one elementary school in Gwangju, the typhoon’s strong gusts blew off the roof of the auditorium.
Hundreds of ships were brought back to ports in anticipation of the storm.
The typhoon grounded numerous flights throughout Sunday and Monday, delaying some and canceling most.
As of 11 a.m. on Monday, 15 flights in and out of Incheon International Airport from Beijing, Qingdao, Shanghai and Guangzhou in China had been cancelled, with another 23 delayed indefinitely.
On Monday, 23 flights inbound and out were cancelled at Gimpo International Airport as well.
However, flights in and out of Jeju Island had started to run on schedule again, and Gimpo Airport plans to add 28 flights in and out of the island to help those stranded over the weekend.
Thousands of weekenders and vacationers were stuck at Jeju International Airport after all flights were cancelled Sunday on account of the typhoon.
Incheon International Airport also retracted 32 flights in and out of China and Jeju because of the tropical storm.
Gimpo cancelled more than two-thirds, or 230, of its flights on Sunday as well.

'무이파' 수도권 피해없어..항공편 결항
제주•전라•충청은 인명•재산 피해 속출
제9호 태풍 '무이파'의 영향으로 전국에 강 풍을 동반한 비바람이 몰아치면서 제주와 전라•충청지역 중심으로 피해가 속출했다 .
직격탄을 맞은 제주와 전라•충정 지역에서는 인명 피해가 잇따랐고, 농가에서 는 침수, 낙과 등 농작물 피해가 잇따랐다.
그러나 수도권은 항공편과 여객선 결항 등을 제외하고는 별다른 피해가 접수되 지 않았다.
태풍 무이파는 8일 오후 4시 현재 백령도 북북서쪽 약 120㎞ 부근 해상에서 시속 약 33㎞의 속도로 북진하고 있다. 현재 중심기압 980헥토파스칼, 중심 부근 최대 풍속은 초속 27ｍ(시속 97㎞)로 강도는 '중'이고 크기는 소형급이다.
서해안을 중심으로 전국에 내려진 태풍 특보는 오후 들어 대부분 해제됐다.
기상청은 "무이파는 북진을 계속해 오늘 밤 신의주 부근으로 상륙한 후 북~북동 진해 9일 오후부터 밤사이에 온대저기압으로 변질될 것"이라고 예상했다.
◇ 인천ㆍ김포 항공편•여객선 결항 속출
태풍 무이파가 수도권으로 북상하면서 중국과 제주, 김해 등을 오가는 항공기 결항이 속출했다.
인천국제공항에서는 이날 오전 중국 베이징, 칭다오, 상하이, 광저우 등을 오가 는 비행기 도착 5편, 출발 10편 등 15편이 결항했다. 또 중국 노선 비행기 도착 14 편, 출발 9편 등 23편이 지연되기도 했다.
김포국제공항에서는 이날 오전 김해국제공항을 오가는 항공기 출발 12편, 도착 11편이 결항했으며, 울산공항을 다니는 비행기는 출발과 도착 각각 2편씩 뜨지 못했 다.
그러나 7일 무더기로 결항했던 제주도 노선은 이날 정상 운항됐다.
인천과 섬을 오가는 12개 항로의 여객선 운항은 온종일 통제됐고 덕적도, 자월 도 등 인천 앞바다 섬 피서객 650명을 숙소로 긴급 대피했다.
태풍의 직접영향권에 든 백령도는 순간 최대풍속이 초속 29.4ｍ를 기록하기도 했으나 인명 피해 등 큰 피해는 없었다.
이날 오후 3시 현재 인천시 재난안전대책본부에 접수된 태풍 피해는 간판ㆍ창문 탈락 22건, 천막 제거 6건, 수목 전도 6건, 주택 지붕 이탈 3건 등 총 41건이다.
경기지역도 지역에 따라 초속 20ｍ가 넘은 강한 바람이 불었으나 도 재난종합상 황실에 큰 피해는 접수되지 않았다.
인천 옹진군과 면사무소는 태풍이 이날 오전 백령도와 연평도 등 서해 5도에 직 접적인 영향을 줄 것으로 예보됨에 따라 온종일 비상 대비태세를 유지했다.
◇ 인명피해에 침수•과수낙과도 속출
7일 밤부터 8일 사이 태풍의 영향으로 제주와 전라. 충청 지역에는 인명. 재산피해가 잇따랐다.
7일 오후 5시40분께 전남 완도군 고금면 덕동리 선착장에서 김모(75)씨가 1t짜 리 배를 정박시키려다 파도에 휩쓸려 숨졌고, 오후 8시40분께는 전남 화순군 한천면 한 하천에서 수련회에 참가했던 50대 여성이 급류에 휩쓸려 숨졌다.
같은 날 오후 9시께는 전남 진도군 조도면 서거차항 인근 바다에서 김모(72)씨 가 실종됐고, 앞서 오전 11시35분께 부산 사하구 구평동 방파제에서 이모(64)씨가 파도에 휩쓸려 실종돼 경찰 등이 수색작업을 벌이고 있다.
지난 6월 태풍 메아리로 유실됐던 국토 최서남단인 전남 신안군 가거도 방파제 는 이번에도 480ｍ 가운데 200여ｍ가 파손 또는 유실됐고 64t짜리 테트라포드 2천여 개가 유실돼 200억원(추정) 이상의 피해가 났다.
전국 배 상산량의 20%를 차지하는 나주 지역에서는 추석 출하를 앞둔 배밭 300여㏊가 낙과 피해를 입은 것으로 잠정 집계됐고 곳곳에서 비닐하우스와 축사, 어선 등 파손 피해가 잇따랐다.
완도와 진도 등 서남해안 가두리 양식장에서도 양식시설이 파도에 떠내려갔다.
광양시 진상•다압면 등에서는 크고 작은 산사태 10건이 발생했으며, 강풍을 견디지 못해 나주, 해남 등에서 가로수 52그루가 쓰러지는 등 전국 곳곳의 가로수도 쓰러졌다.
광주 북구에서는 상가 간판이 떨어지면서 전선을 끊는 바람에 3천400여가구에 정전이 발생했다 30여분 만에 복구되는 등 11만3천가구가 일시적인 정전 피해를 봤다.
전북지역도 도로가 유실되고 가로수가 넘어지는 등 피해가 속출했다.
하천이 범람하면서 남원시 산내면 덕동리 지방도 861호 편도 1차선이 200ｍ가량 유실돼 차량 운행이 통제됐다.
무주 덕유산과 남원 지리산, 정읍 내장산, 제주 한라산 등 전국 주요 산의 입산 과 해수욕장 입욕이 통제되기도 했다.
제주에서도 초등학교 지붕이 날아가고 수령이 600년 된 팽나무가 부러져 조선시 대 관아건물을 덮치는가 하면 2만5천여가구가 정전되는 등 각종 피해가 속출했다.
