Five killed after vehicle overturns

MUJU (Yonhap News) -- Five university students were killed with as many injured Sunday when their van overturned near a tunnel in this southern county, police said.

The five students from Chungnam National University died after their vehicle slammed into a guardrail on a road in Muju, about 240 kilometers south of Seoul, at around 1:10 p.m., a local police spokesman said, adding they had rented the van for a retreat.

Three of the five surviving students sustained serious injuries and are being treated at Chungnam National University Hospital in Daejeon, north of Muju.

The van was bound for Daejeon when it hit the guardrail on a curvy, downhill section and rolled about two meters into the woods nearby, the police said. They added most of the students were not wearing their seatbelts.

One survivor said it all happened quickly.

"I felt we were speeding a bit," the surviving student said.

"And all of a sudden, there was a bang and the car flipped upside down."

The police said they're still trying to determine the cause of the accident.

승합차 전복..충남대생 10명 사상

7일 오후 1시10분께 전북 무주군 적상면 구천터널 부근 도로에서 강원직(27)씨가 몰던 스타렉스 승합차가 가드레일을 들이받 고 전복됐다.

이 사고로 강씨 등 5명이 숨지고 3명이 중상을, 2명이 경상을 입었다.

충남대 무역학과 선후배 사이인 이들은 6일 차량을 빌려 무주로 엠티(MT)를 왔 다가 변을 당했다.

대전 쪽으로 달리던 차량은 굽은 도로에서 가드레일과 충돌한 뒤 2m가량 벗어나 수풀지대로 전복됐다.

차량은 사고 당시 충격으로 차체가 심하게 찌그러졌고 유리창이 모두 박살났으 며, 의자도 대부분 부서졌는데 학생들 대부분이 안전벨트를 매지 않아 사상자가 많 이 발생한 것으로 알려졌다.

사고 차량에 탑승했던 한 학생은 "승합차가 비교적 빠른 속도로 길을 달린다고 생각했는데 갑자기 쿵쾅거리며 순식간에 차량이 뒤집어졌다"고 말했다.

사고가 난 도로는 급커브 내리막길이어서 늘 대형사고 위험이 높은 곳이다.

사망자들은 무주장례식장에 안치됐고 중상자 3명은 충남대병원으로 후송됐다.

무주군은 사고수습대책본부를 구성해 사고 수습에 나섰고, 경찰은 생존자와 목 격자 등을 상대로 정확한 사고 경위를 조사하고 있다.
