Parents spy on their children via social networking sites

More than 55 percent of parents snoop on what their children are doing through social networking systems, the Daily Mail reported.

According to the research conducted by computing company Bullguard Internet Security, about 40 percent of parents monitor their children’s status updates and posts on their wall.

Social networking systems such as Facebook, MySpace and Twitter have become widely popular with 75 percent of 16 to 24-year-olds reportedly having posted messages on one of the sites, according to the Office for National Statistics.

When parents were asked why they snoop on their children on Facebook, a quarter admitted it was the only way they could get updates on what their children are doing.

Parents blamed their overprotective instincts and nosiness by 6 percent and 14 percent respectively. Another 6 percent reasoned that it helps them avoid awkward conversations with their children.

As a backlash to parents spying, teenage users started to form groups such as "For the love of god-don’t let parents join Facebook" which has more than 7,700 members now.

불가드 인터넷 보안 (Bullguard Internet Security) 조사 기관에 따르면 약 40% 정도의 부모가 자녀의 상태 업데이트와 담벼락에 올라오는 친구들의 글을 살펴보는 것으로 나타났다.

영국 국립 통계청에 따르면 16세에서 24세 사이 젊은 층 중 페이스 북, 마이 스페이스, 트위터와 같은 소셜 네트워킹 시스템 어느 하나에라도 글을 올려 본 적이 있는 사람이 75%나 된다.

설문조사에 따르면 자녀의 페이스 북을 왜 몰래 엿보냐라는 질문에 1/4에 해당하는 부모가 사이버 공간을 염탐하는 것 만이 자녀의 근황을 알 수 있는 유일한 소통 방법이라고 했다.

이 외에 6%의 부모는 과잉 보호 본능, 14%는 캐묻는 것을 좋아하는 본인들의 성격을 탓했고 또다른 6%는 아이들과 ‘어색한 대화를 피하기 위해서’ 라고 답했다.

부모님의 사이버 공간 염탐에 맞서서 많은 청소년들이 부모님을 ‘페이스 북에 가입하지 못하게 하자’는 페이스 북 그룹에 가입해서 현재 7,700명이 모였다고 한다.
