‘Coca-cola in Pyongyang was a rumor’: official

The Coca-Cola Company officially denied the local news reports on making inroads into the North Korean market.

“No representative of The Coca-Cola Company has been in discussions or explored opening up business in Pyongyang, North Korea,“ Kent Landers, a PR official of the company, told the Korea Herald via email on Friday.

Meanwhile, Park Chul-soo, president of Chosun Daepoong Group also denied the rumor that Coca-Cola and KFC would enter North Korea.

“It is nonsense that Coca-Cola and KFC will open a store in Pyongyang,” he said in an interview with a Yonhap correspondent in Beijing. Chosun Daepoong Group is North Korea’s major channel for attracting foreign investment.

However, other reports say that North Korean business delegations expressed interest in opening a branch in Pyongyang. The North Korean team dined at KFC during their visit to the United States in April, Voice of America reported.

KFC has not responded to any of the reports.

코카콜라 대변인 “北진출 논의한 바 없다”


미국 코카콜라 본사의 켄트 렌더스 대변인은 최근 북한 평양에 지점을 개설하기로 했다는 보도와 관련, “코카콜라 관계자 가운데 누구도 평양사업 진출을 논의한 바 없다”고 공식적으로 밝혔다고 미국 자유아시아방송(RFA)이 15일 보도했다.

미국의 한 경제전문가는 이 방송에 “설령 코카콜라와 북한이 (코카콜라) 평양지점을 개설하기로 합의했더라도 현재 북미 간 정치 상황을 고려할 때 이런 사실을 표면화하기는 어려울 것”이라고 말했다.

방송은 또 코카콜라와 함께 평양 진출 기업으로 거론된 미국 KFC의 해외사업부 공보실이 아직 공식 입장을 밝히지 않고 있다고 전했다.

앞서 북한 조선대풍국제투자그룹의 박철수 총재는 전날 연합뉴스와 통화에서 “대풍그룹의 주선으로 코카콜라와 KFC가 평양에 지점을 개설키로 했다는 얘기는 터무니없다”고 부인했다. (연합뉴스)
