North Korean universities are to be closed for the next ten months in order to supply laborers for construction projects.
As the next year marks 100th anniversary for the birth of the “eternal leader” Kim Il-sung, the government is striving to restore its economy in order to create a “strong and powerful nation of socialism.”
Pyongyang announced that all universities would be closed from June 27, allowing only few lectures for seniors or foreign students.
Students are instead required to participate in numerous development projects. However, although the North plans countless bold projects, most of them end up incomplete due to lack to resources and materials.
For example, the initial project to built 100,000 houses has stopped only 20 percent of the way through. Some parts of the project could not even progress further than groundbreaking.
Yet, development of areas including the cemetery of the late leader is progressing as planned, showing Pyongyang’s drive to divinize Kim Il-sung.
The schools are to be reopened next April, after the birthday of the late Kim.

북한이 대학생들을 건설 현장 등에 동원하기 위해 27일부터 모든 대학에 휴교 조치를 내렸다고 일본 교도통신이 복수의 소식통을 인용해 28일 서울발로 보도했다.
이번 조치는 고(故) 김일성 주석의 출생 100주년을 앞두고 경제 재건을 위해 이뤄졌다고 교도통신은 전했다.
통신에 따르면 북한 지도부는 졸업반과 외국인 유학생 대상 교과목을 제외한 모든 수업을 취소하도록 전국 대학에 지시했다는 것이다.
이번 휴교 조치는 김 주석의 생일이 돌아오는 내년 4월까지 약 10개월 동안 계속될 것으로 알려졌다.
북한은 김 주석의 출생 100주년인 내년을 ‘강성대국 진입의 해’로 선포하고 평양의 만수대 지구 재개발과 주택 10만호 건설과 같은 사업에 착수했으나 자재난 등으로 어려움을 겪는 것으로 전해졌다.
