The number of South Korean travelers going overseas rose 4.7 percent in the first four months of the year from a year earlier despite a recent earthquake and tsunami that hit Japan, the top destination for outbound tourists, data showed Friday.
According to the data released by the Justice Ministry and the Korea Tourism Organization, the number of South Koreans going overseas came to 4.09 million in the January-April period, compared with 3.91 million a year earlier.
However, the figure for April was 867,487, down 7.3 percent from a year earlier.
In March, the number of outbound South Korean travelers dropped 8.6 percent from a year earlier mainly due to a decline in "Many people are going overseas, and we expect the number of outbound travelers to have picked up this month as there were many holidays," said an official at a travel agency.
Meanwhile, the number of foreign travelers visiting South Korea gained 3 percent on-year to 2.78 million in the first four months of the year, according to the data.

올해 출국자가 넉 달 만에 400만명을 넘어서며 일본 대지진이란 큰 악재에도 잰걸음을 이어가는 것으로 나타났다.
27일 한국관광공사와 출입국관리사무소 등에 따르면 정식 집계된 4월 말까지의출국자 누계는 모두 409만5천816명으로, 넉 달 만에 400만명을 넘어섰다.
지난해 같은 기간의 391만2천453명보다는 4.7% 늘어난 것이다.작년부터 이어온 해외여행 붐에 따라 연초에 거침없는 상승세를 보이던 출국자수는 3월11일 일어난 일본 대지진 이후 주춤하는 모습을 보였다.
그러나 해외여행 비수기에 속하는 4월(86만7천487명)에는 지난해 대비 감소폭(7.3%)이 3월(8.6%)보다 줄어들면서 반등하는 모습을 보였다.
주요 여행사들의 5월 출발 해외여행 상품 판매 실적도 지난해에 거의 육박하는모습을 보였다.
한 여행업계 관계자는 "일본 대지진에도 '풍선효과'로 다른 지역 여행 수요가 늘어나는 등 해외여행 심리가 여전히 뜨겁다"며 "신종플루나 금융위기 같은 대형 악재가 터지지 않는다면 올해 남은 기간은 연초의 상승세를 되찾을 것"이라고 말했다.
한편, 4월까지 우리나라를 찾은 외국인 수는 278만8천985명으로, 지난해(270만8천523명)보다 3%가량 늘었다.
국적별로는 가장 큰 비중을 차지한 일본인 입국자가 90만6천116명으로 지난해보다 8% 줄었지만, 중국인(58만8천82명, 12.9%↑)과 태국인(12만1천24명, 30.1%↑)의 방문이 많이 늘며 전체적인 상승세를 이끌었다
