When French President Nicolas Sarkozy was briefed on the arrest of IMF chief Dominique Strauss-Kahn on sexual assault charges, his first response would have been a kind of “I told you so!” French daily Le Parisien reported, citing his aides.
The guess is based on the cynical comments Sarkozy made one year ago regarding a sexual scandal involving the head of the international bank.
According to his aides, the French president said in a meeting with lawmakers of the ruling UMP (Union for a Popular Movement), “Some say I have some women issues. But compared to Strauss-Kahn I am nothing.”
“You may well call me a Methodist minister,” he joked.
He also said to a group of women journalists, “If DSK returns, it will be a problem not for me, but for you!”
The presidential office has ordered officials and lawmakers to be cautious about the sexual assault case.

사르코지 “거봐, 내가 그럴 거라고 했지?”
니콜라 사르코지 프랑스 대통령이 1년 전에 도미니크 스트로스-칸 국제통화기금(IMF) 총재의 여성편력에 대해 언급한 내용이 화 제가 되고 있다고 르 파리지앵 신문이 16일 보도했다.
르 파리지앵에 따르면, 사르코지 대통령은 1년 전쯤 자신이 이끄는 집권당 대중 운동연합(UMP) 국회의원들에게 스트로스-칸 총재의 여자관계에 대해 “나를 두고 여자문제가 복잡하다는데, 그에 비하면 나는 감리교 목사 정도 된다”고 주장했다.
사르코지는 또 자신의 사치스런 생활과 관련해서도 “내 시계는 스트로스-칸 총 재의 것에 비하면 싸구려에 속한다”고 언급했다.
특히 사르코지는 여성 언론인들과 만난 자리에서 “DSK(스트로스-칸 총재의 약자 )가 돌아온다면 나한테 문제가 되는 것이 아니고, 여러분들에게 문제가 될 것”이라 고 경고했다고 르 파리지앵은 소개했다.
따라서 사르코지 대통령은 15일 오전 그자비에 뮈스카 비서실장으로부터 스트로 스-칸 총재의 체포 소식을 들었을 때 “거봐, 내가 그럴 것이라고 말했지?”라는 반응 을 보였을 것이라고 측근들은 추측했다고 신문은 덧붙였다.
한편 엘리제궁 관계자들은 이번 사건과 관련해 “매우 신중하게” 대응하라는 지 침이 내려졌다고 르 피가로 신문이 전했다.
