South Korea's prime minister said it is worthwhile to study the idea of deploying military troops on Dokdo to strengthen sovereign control of the nation's easternmost islets in the face of Japan's repeated territorial claims.
South Korea has kept a small police detachment on Dokdo in the East Sea since 1954.
"In reality, it's appropriate to station police, but we should consider the idea of deploying strong military troops there, depending on the situation," Prime Minister Kim Hwang-sik told lawmakers on Thursday.
The Defense Ministry said it had no immediate comment.
Kim's comments came weeks after Tokyo approved a set of new middle school textbooks that described Dokdo as Japanese territory.
The move rekindled South Korea's deep resentment against Japan, which ruled the Korean Peninsula between 1910 and 1945 as a colony.
President Lee Myung-bak has vowed that his government will take measures to reinforce effective control of Dokdo to counter Japan's renewed claims to the islets.
South Korea earlier this week announced a plan to construct a long-envisioned maritime science base in waters off Dokdo by the end of next year.

그는 "지금 현실적으로 여러가지 종합 상황을 고려할 때 경찰이 관할하는 정도 로 충분하다는 생각을 갖고 있지만, 장기적으로 군대가 가야되는 게 아니냐는 주장 도 있고 그런 점에 대해서는 전략적이고 장기적으로 검토하겠다"고 밝혔다.
김 총리는 또 동남권 신공항 백지화와 관련, "수년이 지나서 여러가지 여건이 바뀌어 다시 검토할 사안이 발견된다면 몰라도 현단계에서 밀양이나 가덕도에 신공 항을 추진할 계획은 없다"고 강조했다.
한편 현인택 통일부 장관은 "북한이 핵무기를 몇개나 만들었다고 보느냐"는 한 나라당 이철우 의원의 질문에 "북한이 갖고 있는 플루토늄 수로 보면 대강 6∼10개 가량 갖고 있을 것으로 추정하고 있다"고 밝혔다.
