Ancient S. Korean medical book to go global

An ancient South Korean medical book, listed on UNESCO's Memory of the World Register, will be published in English for global distribution, the health ministry said Thursday.

An English version of "Donguibogam" is slated to be released in 2013, the 400th anniversary of the book's publication, according to the Ministry of Health and Welfare.

Donguibogam, compiled and edited by Joseon Dynasty (1392-1910) physician Heo Jun, is an encyclopedia of medical knowledge and treatment techniques in East Asia. The 25 volumes of the book were inscripted on UNESCO's Memory of the World Register in 2009, becoming the only medical text to be acknowledged.

The health ministry said it plans to distribute the translated version to organizations and research centers across 50 countries in a bid to boost awareness on Eastern medicine.

"The publication of the book in English will be a great opportunity to promote the value and excellence of Donguibogam," said a ministry official.

동의보감 영어로 번역돼 각국에 배포된다

의학 서적으로는 유일하게 유네스코 세계기록유산으로 등재된 동의보감이 처음으로 영어로 번역돼 출간된다.

보건복지부는 동의보감 발간 400주년을 앞두고 이 책의 우수성을 세계에 알리기 위해 영역을 진행 중이라고 10일 밝혔다.

17세기 동아시아 의학을 집대성해 한의학 발전에 큰 영향을 미치고 세계적으로도 가치를 평가받는 동의보감이 영역되는 것은 이번이 처음이다.

동의보감 총 5편 25권 가운데 지금까지 침구편(鍼灸篇) 1권, 탕액편(湯液篇) 3권, 내경편(內經篇) 4권, 외형편(外形篇) 4권 등은 영역이 완료됐거나 진행 중이다.

또 유행성병, 급성병, 부인과, 소아과 등에 관한 잡병편 11권은 이달 중에 영역 수행기관을 공모한 뒤 작업을 진행해, 동의보감 발간 400주년이 되는 2013년까지 완성한다는 계획이다.

복지부는 완성된 동의보감 영역본을 한의학과 관련이 있는 50여개 국가 주한 공관과 해외 연구기관 및 국제기관에 배포해 우리 전통 의학의 우수성을 알리기로 했다.

또 국내 한의대와 한의학 관련단체, 유관 기관 등에도 배포해 연구 및 홍보 자료로 활용토록 할 방침이다.

복지부 관계자는 "동의보감 영역은 발간 400주년을 맞는 동의보감의 우수성과 가치를 전 세계에 알리는 기회가 될 것"이라고 말했다.
