ANZAC Day marked at Korean War Memorial

April 29, 2012 - 18:13 By Korea Herald
Australians and New Zealanders came together at the War Memorial of Korea on Wednesday to celebrate ANZAC Day.

The day honors the people who served the two countries in past conflicts, as well as those still serving in their respective armed forces.

“It was on this day 97 years ago that the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps at Gallipoli, during the Turkish Campaign of the First World War, made immortal the name ANZAC and established the enduring tradition of selfless service, devotion to duty and of fighting to defend freedom, and the institutions and values held dear,” said New Zealand Defense Attache Col. Jeremy Ramsden.

This year’s commemoration was held during the Ministry of Patriots and Veterans Affairs re-visit program to honor Commonwealth Veterans’ service in the Korean War.

Veterans from Australia, New Zealand, the U.K. and Canada visited from April 21-28.

More than 200 veterans and supporters gathered, including 54 from Australia and New Zealand, at the National War Memorial Museum in Seoul for a dawn service.

It was the first time for the ceremony to be held inside the museum, with members of the Australian and New Zealand communities in Seoul also joining the event along with officials from the ROK and UN Command.
