Strife between South Korea and Japan has aggravated recently as the two regional rivals bicker over territorial and historical issues.

On Tuesday, South Korean President Lee Myung-bak demanded that the Japanese emperor sincerely apologize for the country’s 35-year colonial ruling over Korea in the early 20th century.

“(If the Japanese emperor) wishes to visit South Korea, I think it would be good if he apologizes sincerely to those who passed away while fighting for independence,” Lee said.

Japanese Prime Minister Noda Yoshihiko denounced the remark the next day, saying, “I don’t understand why he made such remarks. It’s regrettable,” according to local newspapers.

In response to rising tension surrounding the disputed islets, Tokyo notified Seoul on Friday that it will take the Dokdo issue to the International Court of Justice. But it is unlikely the move will succeed, as Japan needs South Korea’s consent to have the case heard at the court.

Lee’s comment, coupled with his recent visit to Seoul’s easternmost islets of Dokdo, fueled anti-Korean sentiments in Japan and triggered a number of protests.

Several hundred members of Japanese far-right organizations have staged a demonstration on Thursday in front of the South Korean embassy in Tokyo, according to South Korea’s Dong-A Ilbo newspaper.

The protesters shouted “Takeshima (Dokdo’s Japanese name) is Japanese territory,” “South Korean president should apologize to the emperor,” “Sever diplomatic ties (with South Korea).”.

Anti-Korea protests also took place in major cities including Kobe, Sendai, Osaka and Nagoya, although police did not report any cases of severe violence.

Anti-Japan sentiment is rampant among Koreans, too.

South Korean broadcaster MBC reported that tattoo artist I-lang had staged a one-man protest in front of the controversial Yasukuni shrine in Tokyo, demanding that Japan apologize for the forced army recruitment and sexual slavery of young Korean women that took place at the time of Japan’s colonialism of Korea.

Many Koreans are offended by continued visits to the shrine by Japanese politicians, as it honors Japan’s war dead, including class-A war criminals.

동아일보 보도에 따르면 일본의 ‘힘내라 일본! 전국행동위원회’라는 보수 성향 시민 단체 소속 350명이 16일 주일 대사관 앞에 모여 일장기를 흔들며 시위를 벌였다고 한다.

이들은 “다케시마(독도의 일본식 이름)는 일본의 고유 영토다”, “한국 대통령은 천황폐하에 사죄하라”, “국교를 단절하라” 등의 구호를 외쳤다.

이와 같은 시위는 고베, 센다이, 오사카, 나고야 등 주요 도시에서 연이어 계속되었다.

한편 지난 15일 일본 도쿄의 야스쿠니 신사 앞에서 강제징용과 위안부 문제 등에 대한 일본 정부의 사과를 요구하는 1인 시위를 벌이던 문신예술가 이랑(38)씨가 우익으로 보이는 일본인에게 폭행을 당했다고 주장해 파장이 확산되고 있다.

그는 “경찰에 연행되던 중에 검은 양복을 입은 대여섯 명의 일본인이 나를 폭행했다”면서 “그들은 나를 폭행하면서 ‘조센징’, ‘죽어라’ 등의 말을 했다”고 전했다.

두 나라 사이의 감정싸움이 도를 넘으면서 한일 양국의 해묵은 갈등이 더욱 깊어지고 있다.
