The government will investigate seven big coffee franchises operating in the country's capital area and five other large cities to see if they violated local labor laws, the labor ministry said Thursday.
The seven chains are Caffe Bene, Coffee Bean, Starbucks, Tom N Toms, Pascucci, Angel-in-us and Hollys.
The move came after a local daily reported earlier this week that franchise coffee shops do not pay a proper weekly holiday allowance to their part-time workers. By law, employers must give paid, one-day leave to their workers if they work six days a week.
The probe will focus on whether the companies' part-time workers get the statutory minimum wage of 4,320 won (US$4.03) per hour and a weekly holiday allowance, according to the ministry.
"Coffee shops that are found to have breached the law will be instructed to correct their practices. Otherwise, they will face criminal punishment," a ministry official said. (Yonhap News)
