’Matrix’ director admits getting sex change

Sept. 5, 2012 - 17:27 By Korea Herald
Famed co-director of Hollywood films, like “V for Vendetta” and “Speed Racer,” admitted to having a sex change, according to news reports.

Andy and Lana Wachowski, siblings, directed hugely influential films like the “Matrix” trilogy. Little was known about them because they remained very private. However, the siblings opened up in a recent interview to promote their new film “Cloud Atlas” and to give insight into Lana’s struggles to become a woman.

Lana was known as Larry before her sex change in 2002.

She realized something was wrong in the third grade at a Catholic school. When students lined up according to sex, young Larry did not know where to go.

“I just stopped in between (the two lines). I stood for a long moment with everyone staring at me, including the nun. I was stuck -- I couldn’t move,” she said.

Young Larry grew up in fear that his family would reject him if they knew that he was transgender, so he kept quiet about his feelings. Lana recalled not being able to sleep for days because of the terror she had felt knowing she had to tell her family at some point about her true nature.

In 2002, the Wachowskis’ mother flew out onto the set of the second “Matrix” film when she sensed that Larry was very bothered by something, Larry then admitted that he indentified with the female sex. To his relief, his mother Lynne and the rest of his family accepted the news and gave him unconditional support to go through with the surgery.

Lana said, “I chose to change my exteriority to bring it closer into alignment with my interiority. My biggest fears were all about losing my family. Once they accepted me, everything else has been a piece of cake.”
