An Asian student group at Duke University held a rally Wednesday against a fraternity party that some considered racist.

The Asian Students Association and the Asian American Alliance held the “Race is Not a Party: Rally for an Inclusive Duke” rally to decry last week’s Asian-themed party held by the Kappa Sigma fraternity.

“The events of the past week have deeply hurt students in our community,” wrote the group on Facebook. “We will use this opportunity to spread awareness of why the events of the past week were hurtful and to establish a concrete plan for how our community can move forward.”

The participants of the rally demanded that Kappa Sigma apologize by taking actions against discrimination, while requesting that leaders of the school’s student organizations form a joint taskforce to respond to discriminatory actions.

Kappa Sigma’s “International Relations” party drew fire from fellow students after the photos of the party -- which included a half-naked man Asian-styled straw hat kissing a woman -- were revealed. The group was further criticized for its party invitation, which had the salutation “Herro Nice Duke Peopre,” apparently mocking Asian accents.

The party, originally named “Asia Prime,” was canceled after school authorities urged them to do so but party organizers decided to change the its name and go ahead with the original plan.

Katherine Zhang, co-president of the Asian Students Association, told the Duke Chronicle that the object of the protest was to reach beyond the party, or even racism against Asian students.

“The problem is to assume that the skin in which America has determined that I am makes me not fully human,” Xiang told the school paper. “It is a skin that I cannot take off, a skin that they can put on as a costume and make it a fun night. It is completely trivial to (them) but (they) don’t have to live in our world.”

The party also drew furious response from Korean users over the Internet.

“There are childish people everywhere; America’s not an exception,” a netizen wrote on his or her Twitter account.

Another chimed in with “Basically they (Americans) think we’re beneath them, although they pretend to be kind.”

이들은 또한 파티의 장면을 담은 전단지를 배포하며 문제를 제기했다.

이들은 전단지에 “이 사진에 나온 듀크대 학생들 중에 아시아인은 없다”고 적어 사진에 찍힌 참석자들이 백인임을 강조했다.

아시아 학생회의 공동 회장 캐서린 장은 이번 사태가 단순히 아시아인들에 대한 차별 이상의 문제를 담고 있다고 강조했다.

“문제는 미국이 규정하는 내 피부색 때문에 내가 ‘완전한 인간’이 아니라고 추정하는 것이다”라고 장은 말했다. 그녀는 이렇듯 피부색을 농담거리로 여기는 사람들에게는 사소한 문제일지 모르나 “그들은 우리 (아시아인들)의 세계에 살고 있지 않다”라고 주장했다.

또한 파티 초대장에는 “헤로, 나이스 듀크 피플’ 등 아시아인의 영어발음을 희화하는 표현이 담겨 더욱 논란이 되고 있다.

듀크 크로니컬에 따르면 파티의 주최자들은 애초에 “아시아 프라임”이란 이름으로 파티를 열려고 하다가 학교측의 만류로 인해 파티를 취소한 다음, 이름만 “국제 관계(International Relations)”로 바꿔 파티를 열었다고 한다.
