Hollywood actress Anne Hathaway admits she underwent a “complete transformation” to play the villainous vixen Selina Kyle in the big-screen blockbuster “The Dark Knight Rises.”

Starring Christian Bale as Batman and Tom Hardy as his nemesis Bane, the movie is the third and final installment in director Christopher Nolan‘s Dark Knight trilogy. Returning for the final movie are “Batman Begins” and “The Dark Knight” cast veterans Gary Oldman, Michael Caine and Morgan Freeman.

Best known for her roles in “Rachel Getting Married,” “Becoming Jane,” “The Devil Wears Prada,” “Brokeback Mountain” and “The Princess Diaries,” and a likely Oscar contender for the upcoming musical “Les Miserables,” Hathaway said she worked hard to prepare physically to play her first action heroine, a character Warner Bros. describes as a “cunning cat burglar with a mysterious agenda.”

“When I got the part, Chris called me into his office and said: ’So, there‘s going to be a lot of fighting and when we did ’Inception,‘ [Joseph Gordon-Levitt] got in really good shape. Joe went to the gym for months, so that way when we did his fight sequences, he did all his own fighting.’ I really liked that,” Hathaway laughed during a recent press conference in Los Angeles.

“And I went, ‘Gotcha, I am reading between the lines here,’” recalled the 29-year-old Brooklyn, N.Y. native. “And I just went to the gym and came out when we wrapped. And it was a complete transformation. I had never done anything like that because it wasn‘t just about looking a certain way. I had to learn how to fight and become strong enough to fight for many days at a time. And that was actually something I felt very lucky about. ... I don’t know what other actresses have gone through, I feel like sometimes there is a mandate that comes to you, an ideal of how you have to look and the way I was always treated on this movie was, ‘Learn how to do what you need to do and then however you look, that’s way the character looks.‘ And I just felt as a woman very protected in that way.”

So, how did she manage all that wearing sky-high heels?

“You just do. It’s part of being a woman. You just figure it out. ‘The Devil Wears Prada’ was really good training for that,” she quipped. “For that, I ran up and down Manhattan, for this, I ran up and down Gotham.”

“제가 그 배역을 받았을 때, 크리스가 저를 사무실로 부르더군요. 그러고는 ‘액션장면이 굉장이 많을 거야. 내가 조셉 고든-레빗(Joseph Gordon-Levitt)과 영화 ‘인셉션(Inception)’을 찍었을 때 조셉은 몸매가 훌륭했지. 수 개월동안 체육관에 다녔어, 조셉은. 그래서 액션장면마다 본인이 직접 연기했지. 난 그 점이 굉장히 마음에 드렀어.’라고 말하더군요.”라고 해서웨이가 최근 LA에서 열린 기자회견에서 말하며 웃음을 터뜨렸다.

“그래서 저는 ‘좋았어, 무슨 말인지 알겠어.’ 라고 생각했죠.”라며 29세의 뉴욕 브룩클린 토박이인 그녀가 말했다. “그래서 그냥 체육관으로 바로 갔고 영화 촬영이 다 끝났을 때 체육관 가는 것도 그만뒀죠. 완전한 변신이었어요. 그런 걸 해본 적이 없었어요. 그냥 단지 어떻게 보여야 한다는 게 아니라 정말 싸우는 법, 매일매일 싸우는 법을 배워야 했거든요. 행운이었던 것 같아요. 다른 여배우들은 이런 과정을 어떻게 소화하는지 모르겠지만 좋은 기회인 것 같아요. 주어진 것을 어떻게 하는가를 배우는 거죠. 당신이 어떻게 보이느냐가 곧 그 캐릭터가 어떻게 보이는가죠.”

그녀가 치명적 높이의 하이힐은 어떻게 소화했을까?

“그냥 하는 거죠. 여자가 되는 과정이에요. 그냥 받아들여야 하죠. “악마는 프라다를 입는다(The Devil Wears Prada)”를 찍으며 그 부분에서 훈련을 많이 했죠. 맨하탄을 얼마나 뛰어다녔는지 몰라요.”
