Lightning struck a tree at a Houston soccer field Sunday, killing two men and injuring a third, authorities said.

The three victim, members of the Cuatepec Guerrero soccer team, had taken cover under the tree when a thunderstorm interrupted their match at the La Escondida Soccer Club fields. The lightning bolt struck about noon, the Houston Chronicle reported.

Harris County Sheriff's Office Deputy Joe Shriver, who was at the field, said he ran to the tree and found the three men motionless on the ground.  

"It was nothing like I've ever seen," Shriver said.

One of the players died immediately, a second was pronounced dead at a hospital and the third was in stable condition, the newspaper said. Their names had not been released.

Officials said the two deaths were the 12th and 13th lightning fatalities in the United States this year, the Chronicle said.

축구 선수 2명, 경기 중 벼락 맞아 사망

미국 텍사스주의 남동부에 위치한 휴스턴의 한 축구 경기장에서 일요일 번개를 맞아 두 명이 사망하고 한 명이 부상을 입었다.

세 남성은 쿠아테펙 구엘레로 축구팀 소속 선수들로 정오께 심한 뇌우로 경기가 중단되자 나무 아래서 번개를 피하고 있던 것으로 밝혀졌다.

당시 그 자리에 있던 경찰 조 시라이버는 사건 직후 나무아래로 뛰어갔지만 축구선수들이 움직이지 않았다며 “지금까지 이런 장면을 본 적이 없었다”라고 말했다.

사고를 당한 축구선수 중 한 명은 그 자리에서 즉사했으며, 다른 한 명은 병원에 후송된 후 사망했고 또 다른 한 명은 안정된 상태에 접어들었다.

숨진 축구선수들의 이름은 밝혀지지 않았으며, 정부 관계자는 이 사건으로 인해 올해 미국에서 번개로 숨진 사망자수가 13명으로 늘어났다고 전했다.
