Brazilians have voted to name the 2014 World Cup mascot Fuleco.

FIFA says more than 1.7 million people in Brazil took part in the vote to select the name for the three-banded armadillo. The other options were Zuzeco and Amijubi.

Fuleco comes from the Portuguese words “futebol” (football) and “ecologia” (ecology), and FIFA says it “seamlessly represents the way in which the FIFA World Cup can combine the two to encourage people to behave in an environmentally friendly way.”

Football‘s governing body said Sunday that Fuleco received 48 percent of the vote, while 31 percent went for Zuzeco and 21 percent for Amijubi. (AP)

2014 FIFA 브라질월드컵 마스코트 확정!


오는 2014년 열릴 FIFA 브라질 월드컵 마스코트의 이름이 ‘풀레코(Fuleco)’로 결정됐다.

FIFA는 1천7백만 명의 브라질 사람들이 참여한 투표에서 아르마딜로의 한 종인 ‘풀레코’를 마스코트의 이름으로 결정짓게 됐다고 밝혔다. 다른 후보로는 ‘주제코’와 ‘아미주비’가 있었다.

‘풀레코’라는 단어는 포르투갈어 단어에서 ‘축구(futebol)’와 ‘환경(ecologia)’를 섞어 만들어졌으며, 이에 대해 FIFA는 “사람들이 더욱 친환경적으로 사고하고 행동할 수 있도록 장려하는 FIFA 월드컵의 방향을 완벽하게 표상한다”고 치켜세웠다.

FIFA는 지난 일요일 ‘풀레코’가 브라질 대국민 투표에서 48퍼센트의 득표로 31퍼센트의 ‘주제코’와 21퍼센트의 ‘아미주비’를 따돌리고 최종 마스코트 이름으로 선정됐다고 발표했다. (코리아헤럴드)
