Samsung Electronics, the world’s largest smartphone maker, led the global ranking for the number of patent applications in mobile phones, semiconductors and smart media, according to the 2014 State of Innovation report by Thomson-Reuters on Monday.

LG Electronics placed second for both mobile phones and semiconductors ― especially a tight race for the latter.

Apart from these patent applications, Samsung ranked No. 9 in the world for medical equipment and No. 8 in alternative fuel vehicles.
