Defending champion Bayern Munich advanced to the second round of the Champions League with a 1-0 win at Viktoria Plzen on Tuesday night, and Manchester City reached the final 16 for the first time by routing CSKA Moscow 5-2.

Real Madrid came from behind in a 2-2 tie at Juventus, and Paris Saint-Germain rallied for a 1-1 draw at Anderlecht, leaving the Spanish and French clubs on the verge of second-round berths.

Mario Mandzukic scored a header in the 65th minute for Group D leader Bayern (4-0), six minutes after entering. Bayern has won nine straight Champions League games, matching the record Barcelona set from 2002-03.
In England, Alvaro Negredo scored three goals and Sergio Aguero two for second-place City (3-1). Aguero converted a penalty kick in the third minute, made it 2-0 in the 20th and ted Negredo for a tap-in in the 30th. Seydou Doumbia cut the gap in first-half stoppage time and Negredo increased the lead to 4-1 in the 51st. After converted a penalty kick in the 71st, Negredo scored on a header with the last touch of the match.

When City won 2-1 two weeks ago, there was racist chanting by home fans that earned the Russian club a partial stadium ban. A small contingent of CSKA fans traveled for the return game and, flanked by a mass of stewards.

“The minimum target was to qualify for the next round but it’s not the only target,” City manager Manuel Pellegrini said. “I’m sure the team we play (in the last 16) will not be very happy to play against us.”

Manchester United (2-0-2) tied 0-0 at Real Sociedad (0-3-1) in Group A after Robin van Persie’s 69th-minute penalty kick hit a post following Markel Bergara’s foul on Ashley Young. United’s Marouane Fellaini was ejected in the 90th minute for his second yellow card.

“That was a game we should have won. It was there for us to take the points, get ourselves in a really strong position,” United manager David Moyes said. “At the moment we’re still top of the group and in a good position.”

Second-place Bayer Leverkusen (2-1-1) tied 0-0 at Shaktar Donestk (0-3-1). United’s Marouane Fellaini was sent off late in the game as Real Sociedad won its first point.

At Turin, Arturo Vidal’s 42nd-minute penalty kick put Juventus (0-1-3) ahead, but Cristiano Ronaldo tied the score in the 52nd for Real Madrid (3-0-1) with his 21st goal in 16 matches this season. (AP)
