미국 음악전문지 빌보드가 소녀시대의 정규 4집 '아이 갓 어 보이(I Got a Boy)'에 대해 "K팝 팬들뿐 아니라 각종 대중음악  애청자에게도 만족스러울 만한 앨범"이라고 평가했다.

빌보드는 4일(현지시간) 홈페이지에 게재한 '아이 갓 어 보이' 리뷰(Track-By-Track Review)를 통해 이같이 밝혔다.

이 매체는 '아이 갓 어 보이'에 대해 "진보적인 EDM(일렉트로닉 댄스 뮤직), 클래식·모던 알앤비(R&B), 1980년대풍 뉴웨이브 등 다양한 장르의 요소를 조합해  완성한 세련된 앨범"이라고 소개했다.

그러면서 시시각각 변화하는 한국 가요 시장에서는 앨범(싱글)을 자주 내야  인기를 유지할 수 있지만, 소녀시대는 탄탄한 팬층 덕에 해외 활동으로 비교적 오래 국내 활동을 안 했는데도 변함없는 인기를 누리고 있다고 덧붙였다.

'아이 갓 어 보이'는 소녀시대가 2011년 10월 발표한 3집 '더 보이즈(The Boys)' 이후 약 14개월 만에 선보이는 앨범이다.

앨범에는 타이틀 곡 '아이 갓 어 보이', 팝스타 더피(Duffy)의 '머시(Mercy)'를

리메이크한 '댄싱 퀸(Dancing Queen)', 재즈풍 트랙 '낭만길' 등 10곡이 수록됐다.

빌보드는 '아이 갓 어 보이'에 대해 "미니멀한 드럼·베이스 사운드에  펑키하면서도 투박한 느낌을 주는 일렉트로닉 사운드, 덥스텝, 드라마틱한 보컬 섹션,  실로폰을 연상시키는 사운드까지 확연히 다른 5개의 사운드가 혼합돼 있다"면서 기존 곡들과는 무척 다른 느낌이라고 소개했다.

그러면서 이 곡은 지금껏 어느 국가에서도 들어보지 못한 가장 진보적인(forward thinking) 팝 트랙이라고 평가했다.

소녀시대가 앨범 발표 전 미리 공개한 '댄싱 퀸'에 대해서는 빌보드 K팝 싱글 차트에 4위로 데뷔했다고 소개하면서 "5년 전에 녹음한 곡으로 히트할 수 있는 걸그룹은 많지 않다"고 치켜세웠다.

'댄싱 퀸'은 소녀시대가 '지(Gee)'로 히트하기 전인 2008년 녹음한 곡이다.

이밖에 '베이비 메이비(Baby Maybe)'와 '익스프레스(Express) 999'에 대해서는 들이 좋아할 만한 요소를 갖춘 대중적인 트랙이라고 평가했으며, '낭만길'에 대해서는 "소녀시대의 기존 노래와 다른 사운드라 팬들이 놀랐을 수도 있지만, 소녀시대에게 무척 잘 어울린다"고 극찬했다.

소녀시대는 5일 오후 8시 서울 강남역 사거리의 엠스테이지에서 신곡 무대를 홀로그램으로 선보이는 '소녀시대 V콘서트'를 연다.

Despite chart ranking, ‘I Got a Boy’ gets positive review from Billboard

The nine ladies of the K-pop girl group Girls’ Generation made their comeback official with the release their fourth full album, “I Got a Boy,” on New Year’s Day. However, despite not receiving the fan uproar that the starlets are accustomed to hearing, Billboard’s recent track-by-track review raved at the group’s new found electro dance pop sound.

“‘I Got A Boy,’ their fourth full-length album, is a confident return home with polished K-pop confections that combine elements of forward-thinking EDM, classic and modern R&B, ’80s new wave, and more,” a review in Billboard Magazine said. “It should more than satisfy not only K-pop fans but also listeners of all types of popular music.”

The girls, who are best known for their cute and innocent qualities, took on a new image and a more hip-hop/upbeat dance approach with their newest release, which received only 5.8 out of 10 stars on the listener-rated chart on Naver Music, an online music site. The album’s early release track, “Dancing Queen” currently sits at the No. 2 spot on the K-pop Billboard Top 100 charts after two weeks, whereas the “I Got a Boy” title track is at No. 36 in its debut week.

However, despite the title track’s less than stellar rankings on the chart, the Billboard Magazine applauds the girls for their attempts to mesh various sounds and genres. 

“The girls’ first Korean single since 2011 needed to be one that caught everyone’s attention. And boy does it.

“I Got A Boy” is not one sound polished and packaged for popular consumption (like past singles), but five completely different sounds stuffed for widespread music consumption,” said the Billboard Magazine review.

“I Got a Boy” is the first full album that SNSD has released in more than a year after their third album, “The Boys,” was released in October 2011.
