A 24-year-old man is under investigation for a crash he caused while driving under the influence of alcohol and without a valid driver's license, killing two people and injuring four, including the drunk driver himself.

Officials at the Incheon Namdong Police Station said the suspect is being investigated for violating the Road Traffic Act and the Act on Cases Concerning the Settlement of Traffic Accidents, specifically Article 3 of the latter, which concerns deaths caused by negligence in traffic accidents.

The suspect is believed to have driven a friend's sedan in the oncoming lane in the early hours of Thursday in Namdong-gu, Incheon, crashing head-on into an SUV driven by a woman in her 60s. The SUV driver and her passenger, a man in his 20s, died in the accident, while the suspect and three passengers in the car sustained injuries.

It was found that the female SUV driver was on her way to a nearby military base to pick up her son, who is a soldier and was to be on leave that day.

The suspect admitted to driving while intoxicated and was found to have had his license suspended for another drunk driving incident. The three people in the car -- all in their 20s -- were acquaintances of his.

Police officials have requested the National Forensic Service to conduct an analysis of the suspect's blood, and are considering additional charges of reckless driving and drunk driving -- if the blood test confirms he was intoxicated. They are also considering charges against the suspect's passengers for abetting drunk driving.
