A Japanese adaptation of acclaimed Korean children's author Baek Hee-na's work has landed on the Academy Awards shortlist. "Magic Candies," directed by Daisuke Nishio of Toei Animation, joins 15 entries from 13 countries competing for Best Animated Short Film.

The film qualified for Oscar consideration after winning the Jury Prize at the New York International Children's Film Festival in March 2024. NYICFF Jury Award recipients gain automatic Oscar eligibility.

The final nominees will be announced on Jan. 17, with the winners unveiled at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles on March 2.

The 20-minute short follows Dong-Dong, a young boy who stumbles upon enchanted candies that let him tap into the thoughts of those around him -- from people to pets, and even inanimate objects. The film blends photorealistic backgrounds with stylized character animation to bring its imaginative story to life.

The adaptation combines two of Baek's works: "Magic Candies" (2017) and "I Am a Dog" (2019). Her storytelling merges everyday moments with magical elements, brought to life through meticulously crafted miniature props and characters that she photographs herself.

Baek entered the field in 2004 with "Cloud Bread" and received the prestigious Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award in 2020.

A CalArts animation graduate, Baek develops her books by handcrafting miniature figures and sets, photographing them under custom lighting. Her technique often combines sculpture with photography to create distinctive illustrations.
