Media artist is known for works exploring LGBTQ+ identity
Media artist Tak Young-jun, 35, whose art often explores LGBTQ+ identities won the 24th SongEun Art Award, the SongEun Art and Cultural Foundation announced Wednesday afternoon.
Tak's third ongoing choreographic film series “Love at First Sight,” which transforms the nature of orally transmitted transcendent love stories into choreography, is on view as part of the exhibition entitled “The 24th SongEun Art Award” underway at SongEun Art Space in Seoul. The exhibition running through Feb. 22 shows 20 artists or collectives shortlisted for the award.
Drawing inspiration from Norwegian writer Lars Mytting’s novel “The Bell in the Lake,” the film series follows a chain of adaptation and re-creation, starting with solo dances created by two female dancers in their late teens based on the parents’ love stories, which then develops into a duet by two male dancers.
The annual award carries a 20 million won prize and a solo exhibition at SongEun Art Space within three years. Financially supported by the SongEun Art and Cultural Foundation and Cartier Foundation for Contemporary Art, two works by the winning artist will be collected by the Seoul Museum of Art.
Founded by the late Yoo Sung-yeon, founder of energy company ST International and once an aspiring artist, the Songeun Art and Cultural Foundation supports emerging Korean artists.
