South Korea's top nuclear envoy embarked on a two-day visit to Japan on Thursday to discuss North Korea's nuclear issue, Seoul's foreign ministry said.
Lee Do-hoon, the special representative for Korean Peninsula peace and security affairs, will meet with his Japanese counterpart Kenji Kanasugi, the ministry said. It marks his first visit to Japan since he took the post in September.

The planned meeting is a follow-up to the latest talks between their foreign ministers in Tokyo, it said.
"The two sides plan to assess security situations following North Korea's long-range missile test and discuss ways to cope with them including the stable management of the situation on the Korean Peninsula and how to prod the North to return to meaningful dialogue," the ministry said.
North Korea fired a new intercontinental ballistic missile in late November, declaring that it has completed its state nuclear force.
