Gyeonggi Province has the lowest suicide rate among municipal governments nationwide. The data excludes the capital city of Seoul.
According to the data provided by Statistics Korea, Monday, the rate of death by suicide in the region steadily decreased from 3,580 in 2011 to 2,879 in 2016.
Gyeonggi Province said this meant that for every 100,000 people in the region, 23 took their own lives. This was the lowest number among all municipal regions in South Korea.

North Chungcheong Province had the highest suicide rate, with 32.8 per 100,000, followed by Gangwon Province with 32.2.
The Gyeonggi government said that the elderly living alone accounted for a significant portion of the suicides, vowing to tackle the issue proactively.
